بِنَفْسِيَwith my life as ransom منthe one فارقتُI parted with فِيهfor his sake تَمَاسُكِيmy composure
كَماjust as أَنَّنيthat I وَاصَلْتُI continued فيهto him تَمسُّكِيmy attachment
My life be ransom for the one for whom I lost my composure,
even as I kept clinging to him;
وَمَنْand the one وَصْلُهُunion with him الصُّبْحُthe dawn الذيthat هوit مُرشِدِيmy guide
كماjust as هَجْرُهُhis estrangement الليلُthe night الذيthat هُوَit مُدْرِكِيwhat overtakes me
and him whose union is the dawn that guides me,
just as his estrangement is the night that overtakes me;
ومَنْand the one لَمْnot أَزَلْI have ceased أَشتاقُI yearn منfrom حُسْنِthe beauty of وَجْهِهhis face
إِلىtoward مَطْلَبٍa goal منfrom دُونِهِbefore it أَلْفُa thousand مُهْلِكِa deadly peril
and him whose face's beauty has kept me ever yearning
for a goal with a thousand deadly perils before it.
ومِنْand from كلevery مُسْلٍcomforter أَوor مُسَكِّنِsoother of لَوْعَةٍburning anguish
بِهِfor him ليfor me إِليهtoward him مُذْكِرِيwhat reminds me أَوْor مُحرّكِيwhat stirs me
And from every comforter or soother of the anguish
I feel for him comes a reminder of him or a spur toward him.
وإِنِّيand indeed I عَلَىdespite ماwhat ذُقْتُI have tasted منof أَلَمthe pain of الهَوَىlove
وقاسَيْتُand I endured مِنْهfrom it كُلَevery مُبْكٍcause of weeping وَمُضْحِكِand cause of laughter
And indeed, despite the pain of love I have tasted
and all I have endured from it that brings tears and laughter,
لِيَحْسُنُis indeed seemly إِلاَّexcept فيwith حبيبيmy beloved تصوُّنِيmy modest restraint
ويَقْبُحُand is unseemly إِلاَّexcept فيwith حَبِيبيmy beloved تهتُّكِيmy shameless abandon
my restraint is seemly, except with my beloved,
and my abandon is unseemly, except with my beloved.
وأَعظمُand the greatest of دائِيmy affliction أَنَّنيthat I لستُI am not أَشْتَفِيI find healing
وأَيْسَرُand the least of صَبْرِيmy endurance أَنَّنيthat I لسْتُI am not أَشْتكِيI complain
And the worst of my affliction is that I find no cure,
and the least of my endurance is that I do not complain.
تشكَّكتُI doubted فيabout وَصْلٍunion تيقنتI was certain of ضِدَّهُits opposite
فأَصْبَحَso became أَحْلَىsweeter منthan يَقِينيmy certainty تَشَكُكِيmy doubt
I doubted union, though certain of its opposite;
so my doubt became sweeter than my certainty.
فأُخْلِدْتُso I was made to dwell forever ظُلْماًunjustly فيin جهَنَّمِthe hell of صَدِّهِhis rejection
وماand not كنتُI was يوماًever فيin هَوَاهُlove for him بِمُشْرِكِas one who associates partners
So I was unjustly made to dwell forever in the hell of his rejection,
though never once had I given him a partner in my love.
