عليكَupon you سلامُpeace اللهِof God قَبْلَbefore سَلاميmy greeting
عليكَ سلامُ اللهِ قَبْلَ سَلامي
وجازاكand may He reward you عنيِّon my behalf اللهُGod قَبْلَbefore كلاميmy words
وجازاك عنيِّ اللهُ قَبْلَ كلامي
May God's peace be upon you before my greeting.
May God's peace be upon you before my greetings,
And may God reward you on my behalf before I speak.
And may God reward you before my words.
تكَفَّلْتَyou took charge of أَمْرِيmy affairs واعْتَنيتَand you cared بِقِصَّتِيfor my case
تكَفَّلْتَ أَمْرِي واعْتَنيتَ بِقِصَّتِي
ونَوَّلْتَنيand you granted me بالفضلِwith generosity فَوقَbeyond مَرامِيmy aim
ونَوَّلْتَني بالفضلِ فَوقَ مَرامِي
You took charge of my affairs and attended to my case.
You have taken care of my affairs and been concerned with my story,
And in your generosity granted me more than I sought.
And favored me with kindness beyond my hopes.
وأَرْشَدْتَنيand you guided me بَعْدَafter انْسِدَادِthe blockage of مَذَاهِبيmy paths
وأَرْشَدْتَني بَعْدَ انْسِدَادِ مَذَاهِبي
وأَرْويتَنيand you quenched my thirst منfrom بَعْدِafter طُولِthe length of أُوَامِيmy burning thirst
وأَرْويتَني من بَعْدِ طُولِ أُوَامِي
And guided me after my paths were blocked.
You have guided me after the blocking of my paths,
And gave me my fill of drink after my long, burning thirst.
And quenched my thirst after my prolonged days.
وأَلبَسْتَنيand you clothed me العزَّhonor الذيwhich ذَلَّbecame submissive بعدهُafter it
وأَلبَسْتَني العزَّ الذي ذَلَّ بعدهُ
زمانِيَmy fortune حتىuntil قُدتُهI led it بِزِمَامِيby my rein
زمانِيَ حتى قُدتُه بِزِمَامِي
And clothed me in honor, after which was humbled
You have clothed me with the honor that humbled
My fortune, till I led it by my rein.
My enemies, till I held their reins.
ورُبَّand many an عَدُوٍّenemy كانwas ليto me مِثلَlike سيِّدٍa master
ورُبَّ عَدُوٍّ كان لي مِثلَ سيِّدٍ
فقدso indeed صارَbecame ليto me منthrough ذِلَّةٍabasement كغُلاميlike my slave
فقد صارَ لي من ذِلَّةٍ كغُلامي
And many an enemy who had been like a master to me
Many a foe of mine became like a master to me,
Has now, in his abasement, become like my slave.
So humiliated that he was like my slave.
ولمand not يَبْقَremain فيin نُعْمَاكyour favor إِلاَّexcept تَمامُهاits completion
ولم يَبْقَ في نُعْمَاك إِلاَّ تَمامُها
وأَحسنُand the finest نُعْمَىfavor زُيِّنتwas adorned بتَمامِwith completion
وأَحسنُ نُعْمَى زُيِّنت بتَمامِ
And your favor lacks nothing but its completion.
Of your blessings there remains only their perfection,
And the finest favor is one adorned with completion.
The best favor is one perfected and completed.
