إِنِّيindeed I اهتديتُI found my way بذلِكby that القمَرِthe moon
لابلno, rather ضَلَلْتُI lost my way بحالِكin the darkness of الشَّعَرthe hair
Indeed, I found my way by that moon.
I was guided by that moon,
No, rather, I lost my way in the jet-black hair.
But I went astray because of your hair.
ولقدand indeed حذِرْتُI feared عليهfor him مجتهداًstriving earnestly
حتىuntil حَذِرْتُI feared عليْهfor him منfrom حَذَرِيmy fear
And indeed, I feared for him with utmost care,
I took great care with it,
until I feared for him from my own fear.
Until I took more care with it than my own caution.
قالواthey said تَغارُyou are jealous عليهover him قلتI said لهمto them
قلبيmy heart يَغارُis jealous عليْهِover him مِنْof بَصَرِيmy gaze
They said, 'You are jealous over him.' I told them:
They said, “You are jealous of it.” I said to them,
'My heart is jealous over him, even of my own gaze.'
“My heart is jealous of it more than my sight.”
