    If the sickness of my heart’s beloved were in my body,

    It would suit me better, or be kinder to me.

    Sickness has indeed made him more beautiful, and me more infatuated.

    So, because of him, I am in rapture and in anguish.

    His fever is fire, and that complexion is of gold,

    And fire is known to beautify gold.

    Whence comes his coolness, when fever strikes him unawares?

    Is this from his cheek, or this from his teeth’s cool sweetness?

    That mouth has indeed grown cooler still,

    Just as that cheek has blazed with flame.

    O you who cannot bear to be kissed

    By your fever, for fear my heart should grow angry,

    فالشَّمسُ محمومَةٌ فاسْعد بِذَا اللَّقب

    I call you the sun, not the eclipsed full moon;

    For the sun is feverish, so rejoice in this epithet.

    وإِن كنيتُ فمَحْبُوبي من العَرب

    I use a byname, and do not name the one I am enamored of;

    And though I use a byname, my beloved is of the Arabs—

    One of those who shun cups of pure wine

    And crave freshly drawn milk in wooden bowls.

    His eyelid’s languid droop is not feigned,

    For beauty’s stamp upon him is not acquired.
