تذكَّرتُI recalled أَيامَthe days الصَّبابَةardent love والصِّباand youth
وعيشاًand a life مليحاًlovely بالمَلحيةِat al-Malhiyya مُعْجِبَاdelightful
I recalled the days of ardent love and youth,
I recalled the days of my youth and prime
And a lovely, delightful life at al-Malhiyya,
And a fine life enjoying the salt flats was sublime
وثوبَand a robe نعيمٍof bliss لاnot يحِلُّis lawful لباسُهits wearing
لذيfor one possessing ورعٍpiety لأَنهbecause it كانwas مُذهَبَاgilded
And a robe of bliss whose wearing is not lawful
A garment of bliss but not for the devout
For a pious man, because it was gilded.
For it was embroidered, inducement to sin throughout
مذهبةُgilded الخدَّيْنin both cheeks يحمرreddens خدهاher cheek
لجنيfor plucking ويجريand flows الماءwater فيهin it ليشرباso it may be drunk
She whose cheeks are gilded—her cheek reddens
Her rosy cheeks aflame, water flows there to imbibe
For plucking, and water flows in it to be drunk.
Rubies glow from her cheeks, pale at times from her shy
ومنand from خدهاher cheek يحمَرُّreddens ياقوتُthe ruby عِقْدِهاof her necklace
ويصفَرُّand turns yellow إِمَّاeither خَجْلةًfrom shame أَوor تَهيُّباfrom awe
From her cheek the ruby of her necklace turns red,
Pearls from her sweet mouth, though the son excels his father
And turns yellow, either from shame or awe.
She changes, enslaves minds with her glance, nothing other
أَبوfather ثَغْرِهَاof her mouth الدُّرُّthe pearls الذيwhich فيin عقودِهاher necklaces
ولكنbut رأَيتI saw الإِبنَthe son قدalready فضلsurpassed الأَبَاthe father
The pearls in her necklaces are her mouth's father,
Many a brave soul she conquered, though no captives taken
But I saw the son surpass the father.
Gifted with eloquence, her waist and hips undertaking
تُغيرshe raids فتَسْبيand so captures باللِّحاظِwith glances عقولَنَاour minds
وكمand how many منof شجاعٍa brave man قدindeed أَغارَraided وماand did not سَبَىtake captives
She raids, and with her glances takes our minds captive,
My tormentor, without you torment would not persist
Yet many a brave man has raided and taken no captives.
Nor would I in Paradise feel anguish I've missed
وقدand indeed أُوتِيتْshe was granted فَصْلَdecisiveness الخطابِof speech ملاحةًin beauty
فأَوجَزso spoke briefly فيهاin her الخصرُthe waist والرِدْفُand the buttocks أَسْهَبَاspoke at length
She has been granted decisive eloquence in beauty:
Nor would my heart be lined with worries untold
So her waist speaks briefly, while her buttocks speak at length.
Nor my eyes bloodshot from tears uncontrolled
مُعذِّبَتيmy tormentress لولاكbut for you لمdid not يَعذُبِbe sweet الرَّدىdeath
ولاnor كنتُI was فيin جناتِthe gardens عدنof Eden مُعذَّباtormented
My tormentress, but for you death would not be sweet,
Nor would my body be fertilized by my wasting away
Nor would I be tormented in the gardens of Eden.
Nor my cheek from my pallor be grassy and gray
ولاnor كانwas قَلْبيmy heart بالهمومwith cares مُكَحَّلاَlined with kohl
ولاnor كَانَwas طرْفيmy eye بالدِّماءِwith blood مخضَّباdyed
Nor would my heart be lined with kohl of cares,
My eyes perceive a thousand stars in the dark
Nor would my eye be dyed with blood.
But none as a star except your visage's spark
ولاnor كانwas جسمِيmy body منfrom هُزاليmy wasting مُخْصِباًfertile
ولاnor كانwas خَدِّيmy cheek منfrom شُحوبيَmy pallor مُعْشِبَاsprouting grass
Nor would my body have grown fertile from my wasting,
My tears confused between flowing and keeping still
Nor would my cheek have sprouted grass from my pallor.
So how can they be, like my heart, swayed at your will
وأَبْصَرand beheld طَرْفيmy eye فيin الدُّجىthe darkness أَلْفَa thousand كَوْكبٍstars
فلمbut did not أَرI see فيهمamong them غَيرَother than وجهِكyour face كَوْكَبَاa star
My eye beheld a thousand stars in darkness,
Since they shortened their visit, my gaze in its shyness
Yet among them I saw no star but your face.
Became a tent, though with tears it finds its fullness
تحيَّرhesitated دَمْعيmy tears بينbetween جَرْيٍflowing ووقفةٍand stopping
فكيفso how تُراهُdo you see it مِثْلَlike قَلبيmy heart مُذَبْذَبَاwavering
My tears hesitated between flowing and stopping;
God watered my youth's days with my tears
How, then, do you find them wavering like my heart?
For Zainab, then God took Zainab those years
ومذand since قوَّضواthey took down أَطْنَابَهُمْtheir tent ropes صارbecame ناظِريmy eye
خِباءًa tent ولكنbut بالدموعِwith tears مُطَنَّبَاsecured by guy ropes
Since they took down their tent ropes, my eye became
That was a time when all my living was pleasant and nice
A tent, but with tears for its guy ropes.
Every breeze in my youth blew soft, sweet, and nice
سقىmay water اللهGod أَيامَthe days الشَّبابof youth مدامِعيmy tears
علىover زينبٍZaynab لاmay not واخَذَhold to account اللهGod زينباZaynab
May God water the days of youth with my tears
And your love was concealed by every concealer
For Zaynab—may God not hold Zaynab to account.
And my life was blessed by each gentle feeler
فذاكfor that زمانٌa time كلُّall عيشيmy life بهin it رِضاًcontentment
وكلُّand every نسيمٍbreeze هبَّblew منfrom صَبْوتيmy youthful passion صَبَاthe east wind
For that was a time when all my life was contentment,
The kisses of the singing girls against my cheek
And every breeze that blew from my passion was the east wind.
You'd think my cheek by their touch was nothing but sleek
وتُضمِرُand conceals حُبِّيlove for me كلُّevery ضامرةِslender woman الحشَاof waist
وتُنْعِمُand makes delightful عيِشيmy life كلُّevery ناعمةِtender woman الصَّباin youth
And every slender-waisted woman hid her love for me,
You'd accept from me a thousand kisses and more
And every tender young woman made my life delightful.
And for love's sake this usury was condoned before
تكاثرَmultiplied لَثْمُkisses الغَانياتِof beautiful women بعَارِضِيon my cheek
فكدتَso you almost تراهُsee it بالمباسِمِwith smiling mouths أَشْنَبَاbright-toothed
The beauties' kisses multiplied upon my cheek,
Then fate bereaved me of my youth, though after that stage
So you almost saw it bright-toothed with their smiling mouths.
I obey only, for youth has passed, disengaged
تقبلُنيshe kisses me عنin return for قبلةٍone kiss أَلفَa thousand قبلةٍkisses
وحُلِّلand was made lawful فيin شَرْعthe law الهَوىof love ذلِكthat الرِّبَاusury
She kisses me a thousand kisses in return for one,
The planets were cruel, their stars attacked me
And that usury was made lawful under the law of love.
Never removing my cloak of sadness fully
فأَثكلَنيthen bereaved me الدَّهرُtime الشبابَof youth وإِنَّماand only
أُطَاعِنُI joust منfrom بعدِafter الشَّبابِyouth بلاwithout شَبَاa spearpoint
Time bereaved me of youth, and I can only
Oh, who can I complain to! Do I address a bull?
Joust after youth without a spearpoint.
Or reproach a scorpion? That would be foolish
أَساءَتdealt ill بيwith me الأَفلاكَthe celestial spheres غارْتmay sink نجومُهاtheir stars
ولاand may not نزعَتْcast off منfrom مَلْبسِthe garment الحُزْنِof grief غَيْهَبَاdeep darkness
The celestial spheres wronged me—may their stars sink,
I returned from the honored and sublime presence
And may they never strip deep darkness from grief's robe.
Alone, though I was the chosen and brought hence
وياand oh ليتwould that شِعْريmy knowledge مَنْwho لمنto whom أَشْتِكيI complain لهاabout them
أُخَاطِبُI address ثَوْراًa bull أَمْرor (apparent textual error) أُعَاتِبُI reproach عَقْرَباa scorpion
Oh, would I knew who—to whom I might complain of them!
And I became outcast when once I was the elect
Do I address the Bull, or reproach the Scorpion?
Spurned when once I was selected and checked
رجعتُI returned بهاthrough them عنfrom حَضْرَةِthe court العزِّof honor والعُلاَand eminence
وحيداًalone وقدand already كنتI had been النَّجيَّthe confidant المُقَرَّبَاthe favored one
Through them I returned from the court of honor and eminence,
I avoided the fair-skinned beloved ones for sure
Alone, though I had been the favored confidant.
And I avoided for passions the greens' secure
وأَصبحتُand I became مُقْصىًexcluded بعدafter أَنthat كنتI was مُصْطَفىchosen
وأَمسيتُand I became مُلقىًcast aside بعدafter ماhaving كنتI was مُجْتَبىselected
I became excluded after having been chosen,
Than even the greatest angel in wisdom and knowledge
And was cast aside after having been singled out.
And the best of them in learning, patience, and privilege
نأَيتُI went far away فياso oh شوقاهُmy longing عنfrom أَبيضِwhite الجَداin bounty
وسرتُand I journeyed فياso oh لهفاهُmy sorrow عنfrom أَخضرِgreen الرُّبَاin uplands
I went far—oh, my longing!—from one white in bounty,
The kings of earth traverse its far reaches
And journeyed—oh, my sorrow!—from one whose hills are green,
To a door they see lowly but exalted in speeches
عَنِfrom المالكِthe master of الأَمْلاكِkings رأْياًin judgment وحكمةًand wisdom
وفاضِلهمand surpassing them عِلْماًin learning وحِلْماًand forbearance ومَنْصِباًand rank
From him who masters kings in judgment and wisdom,
I saw them come to it magnified indeed
And surpasses them in learning, forbearance, and rank.
And I saw them ask permission of one concealed
تجوبُtraverse ملوكُthe kings الأَرضof the earth أَقصَىthe remotest بلادِهاof its lands
لِبابٍto a gate تراهاyou see them خسأَىhumbled ولُغَّباand weary
The kings of the earth traverse its remotest lands
They pace a carpet where the sun has position
To a gate where you see them humbled and weary.
Just as the clouds across it have transmission
رأَيتُهمُI saw them يأْتُونَcome to منهthrough it معظَّماًone revered
وأَبصرتُهُمْand I saw them يستأَذِنُونَask permission of المُحَجَّباthe veiled one
I saw them come through it to one revered,
I stayed with happiness and settledness
And saw them seek permission from the one behind the veil.
And if you wish, say between fondness and finesse
يَطَوْنَthey tread بِساطاًa carpet فيهon it للشمسfor the sun مَنصِبٌa station
كماjust as أَنَّthat فيهon it للسَّحائبِfor the clouds مَسْحَبَاa place to trail
They tread a carpet where the sun has a station,
I hug firmly the hopes though they're broken inside
Just as the clouds have a place to trail upon it.
And I kiss lips of yearnings gap-toothed and wide
أَقمتُI stayed بهwith him بَيْنَbetween البشَاشةِcheerful welcome والقِرىand hospitality
وإِنand if شئْتَyou wish قُلsay بينbetween المحبَّةlove والحَبَاand gifts
I stayed with him amid cheerful welcome and hospitality,
I deliver provisions that once were denied
And, if you wish, say: amid love and gifts.
And I rouse a grandfather who once was belied
أعانقُI embrace للآمالِbelonging to hopes قَدّاًa figure مُهَفْهَفَاًslender
وأَلْثمُand I kiss ثغراًa mouth للأَمانيِّbelonging to wishes أَشْنَباbright-toothed
I embrace the slender figure of hopes,
I intercede until intercession of mine
And kiss the bright-toothed mouth of wishes.
Is not refused, though once I was of sins the sign
وأُوصِلُand I bring near رزقاًa livelihood كانwas منfrom قبلُbefore قدalready نأَىfar away
وأُنْهِضُand I raise up جدّاًgood fortune كانwas منfrom قَبْلُbefore قدalready كَباstumbled
And draw near a livelihood that once had been far away,
And how much favor and grace was brought to me
And raise a fortune that had once stumbled.
And how often I was welcomed heartily
وأَشفعُand I intercede حتىso that لاnot تُردَّis rejected شفاعَتيmy intercession
ولوeven if فيَّfor me إِذsince أَصبحتُI became بالبُعدِthrough absence مَذْنِباguilty
And I intercede, so my intercession is not refused,
Let no one mentioning the Al Mahallabi tribe persist
Even for myself, since absence has made me guilty.
For one has come making them all desist
وكمand how much سِيقَwas brought منof نُعمىbounty إِليَّto me ونعمةٍand a favor
وكمand how often قيلwas said ليto me أَهلاًwelcome وسهلاًand ease ومَرْحَبَاand welcome
How much bounty and how many favors were brought to me,
My eternal friend, if you are present forever
And how often I was told, 'Welcome, be at ease, welcome!'
Oh my sorrow when from you I endeavor
فلاso let not يَذكُرَنْmention آلَthe family المهلَّبof al-Muhallab ذاكرٌone who recalls
فقدfor indeed جاءَhas come منone who يُنسيهمُmakes them forget المُهَلَّبَاal-Muhallab
So let no one mention the house of al-Muhallab:
Due to my poor choices, you were averse to me
For one has come who makes them forget al-Muhallab.
Though my heart held no aversion to thee
فياso oh جَذَلِيmy joy إِنif كنتَyou are فيin الخلدِParadise حاضراًpresent
وياand oh أَسفيmy sorrow إِذsince كنْتُI was عَنهُfrom it مغَيَّبَاkept away
Oh, my joy, if you are present in Paradise,
And were it not that I was not lured from you
And oh, my sorrow, since I am kept away from it.
How could I view Paradise itself as untrue?
لسوءِbecause of the badness اختياريof my choice كانthere was ليfor me عنكaway from you مَذْهَبٌa way
علىdespite أنthat قلبيmy heart لمdid not يجدfind عنكaway from you مذهباa way
My poor choice gave me a way away from you,
And how much favor to you—had my luck not been poor
Though my heart found no way away from you.
You could have called it "father"—and then even more
ولولاand but for أنيthat I ماnot كانthere was بيin me عنكaway from you مرغبa desire to turn
وكيفand how أَرَىI see عنaway from جنَّةِthe Garden الخلدِof Eternity مَرْغَبَاa desire to turn
But for myself, I would have had no wish to leave you;
After my father how much grace came from you I admit
And how could I wish to leave the Garden of Eternity?
Sweeter, gentler, more wondrous all of it
وكمand how many لكَof yours لولاbut for سوءُthe ill بختيof my fortune نعمةٌa favor
مَنَنْتَyou bestowed بهاwith it لوif شئتَyou wished سميتَهاyou would call it أَبَاa father
How many a favor of yours—were it not for my ill luck—
It refused that I remain happy by their claim
You bestowed, which you could, if you wished, call a father.
Misery refused one could be happy, it's the same
وبعدand after أَبيmy father كمhow many نعمةٍa favor منكfrom you نلتُهاI received it
فأَلفيتُهاso I found it أَحْلىsweeter وأَهْنَاand more delightful وأَعجباand more wondrous
And after my father, how many a favor I gained from you,
Misery that stained me and I couldn't resist
And found it sweeter, more delightful, more wondrous.
And disaster that met me with no way to desist
أَبَىrefused ليfor me أَنthat أَبقىI remain السعيدَthe happy one بزعمهمas they claim
شقاءٌmisery أبَىrefused أَنthat يسعدَbe happy المرءُa man إِنْif أَبَىit refuses
It refused to let me remain 'the happy one,' as they claimed—
And what person does fortune befriend and embrace
Misery, which will not let a man be happy if it says no.
That would choose to avoid that noble place?
شقاءٌmisery دهانيbefell me لمdid not أَجدI find عنهfrom it مَصْرِفاًa way to turn
وخطبٌand a calamity أَتانيcame to me لمdid not أَجدI find عنهfrom it مَهْرَباan escape
Misery befell me; I found no way to turn from it,
And if I returned with fruitless rule, I just
And calamity came upon me; I found no escape from it.
Would have returned frustrated, that's a must
وأَيُّand what امرئٍman يختارهchooses him السَّعْدgood fortune مأْلفاًas a companion
فيختارُthen chooses عنfrom ذاكthat الجنابnoble presence تَجَنُّبَاkeeping away
And what man whom good fortune chooses as companion
I returned biting my hand, and my solace
Would choose to shun that noble presence?
Is when my chest tightens to weep and bemoan this
ولوeven if عُدْتُI returned بالملكِwith sovereignty العقيمbarren وإِننيand indeed I
رَجعْتُI returned بهwith it ماnot كنتI was إِلاَّexcept مُخَيَّبَاdisappointed
Even had I returned with barren sovereignty—and indeed I
I seek after separation a perfect reunion
Returned with it—I would have been nothing but disappointed.
So I seek after dawn a setting constellation
رجعتI returned أَعَضُّbiting الراحتينboth palms ورَاحَتيand my relief
إِذاwhen ضاقَtightened صدرِيmy breast أَنto أُبَكىbe moved to tears وأَنْدُبَاand lament
I returned biting both palms; my relief,
Oh, the longing in my soul, if I stayed arising
When my breast is tight, is to be moved to tears and lament.
Is a beacon, my Master, whose light is unceasing
وأَطْلبُand I seek بعدafter البينseparation شملاًa gathering مُنظماًreunited
فأَطلبُso I seek بعدafter الصبحِdawn نجماًa star مُغَرِّبَاsetting
And after parting I seek a reunited gathering,
It would know which wilderness hosts humankind
So I seek, after dawn, a setting star.
And would see which of men is cultivated and refined
فياso oh لهفَthe grief نفسِيof my soul لوif only أَقمتُI had stayed فقَامَthen would rise ليfor me
مَنَارٌa beacon بِموْلىًthrough a lord نُورُهhis light قطُّever ماnot خَبَاdimmed
Oh, my soul's grief! Had I stayed, there would have risen for me
It would meet on my path a lethal adversity
A beacon through a lord whose light never dimmed.
Seeing me as a tested sword of ferocity
وكانand he would have دَرَىknown أَيَّwhich البريةof mankind عِندَهwas with him
وكانand he would have رأَىseen أَيَّwhich الرجالِof men المهذبَاthe refined one
And he would have known which of mankind was with him,
O Greatest of Masters—in my ode it's true
And would have seen which of men was truly refined.
I complained to inspire, not delight in you
وكانand he would have ذاwhen (text uncertain) لاقىengaged بِحَدَّيْwith both edges صَريمةof firm resolve
رآنيَhe saw me سَيْفاًa sword فيupon الرقابnecks مُجرَّبَاtested
And when he engaged with resolve's two edges,
Carry me, carry me, I repent repenting
He would have seen me a sword tested upon necks.
Of a counselor, that you be pleased, not dissenting
أَمولىَO lord المواليof lords إِننيindeed I بقصيدتيin my poem

O lord of lords, in my poem I
And I have honest hopes of your good opinion
Have complained for your pity, not sung for your delight.
My hopes in your good view have no misapprehension
أَقِلْنيforgive me أَقِلْنيforgive me تُبتُI have repented توبةَthe repentance ناصحٍof a sincere man

Forgive me, forgive me: I have repented sincerely,
To please you; I did not sin in my ignorance to anger you.

And I have sincere hope in your favorable regard,
And my hope in your favorable regard is not Ash'ab's.
