تعوَّدتُI have grown accustomed الهَوَىlove والخيرُand goodness عادهْa habit
ولاand not سِيمَاthe like (together: especially) لأَغيَدَfor a graceful youth لاnot لِغَادَهْfor a graceful maiden
I have grown accustomed to love, and goodness is a habit,
I have become accustomed to passion and doing good,
especially for a graceful youth, not a graceful maiden.
Especially for Aghid who has no complaint or grudge.
ضَلاليmy straying فيin تعشُّقِهpassionately loving him رشادٌright guidance
وقَتْليand my being slain فيin محبَّتهloving him شهادَهmartyrdom
My straying in my passion for him is right guidance,
My misguidance in loving him is integrity,
and my being slain in love for him is martyrdom.
And my death in loving him is martyrdom.
وإِنَّand indeed العشقَpassionate love لوif فَطِنُواthey understood ذكاءٌintelligence
وتَرْكُand abandoning العشقpassionate love لوif فَطِنُواthey understood بَلاَدَهْdullness
And indeed, passionate love—if they understood—is intelligence,
Truly, passion, if they were wise, is intelligence,
and abandoning passionate love—if they understood—is dullness.
And leaving passion, if they were wise, is perdition.
فنارُfor the fire القلبِof the heart تخبرُtells عنof شهابٍShihab (a shooting star)
ودمعُand the tears العينof the eye يَرْويnarrate عنfrom قتادَهْQatadah (a thorn tree)
For the heart's fire tells of Shihab,
The fire in my heart tells of a flame,
and the eye's tears narrate from Qatadah.
And the tear in my eye narrates its own story.
وقالواand they said ماnot لِعَاذلهfor his reproacher هُوُوٌّlove
فقلتُso I said ولاnor لهُfor him عنْديfrom me هوادهleniency
And they said, "His reproacher has no love."
And they said, “What is with his disappointed one, distraction?”
So I said, "Nor have I any leniency for him."
So I said, “For me, he has no distraction.”
سأَخلعُI shall cast off لاmay ... not لَبِسْتُI wore لهfor him عِذَارِيmy bridle
وأَقطعُand I shall sever لاmay ... not وَصلْتُI joined لهfor him القِلاَدَهْthe necklace
I shall cast off my bridle—may I never wear it for him!
I will take off what I wore for him, my adornment,
and sever the necklace—may I never fasten it for him!
And cut off what I connected for him, the necklaces.
وبيand I am smitten with منone whom لاnot أُريدُI desire سوىother than رضاهُhis approval
وياand oh بُعْدَthe remoteness المرادِof what is desired منfrom الإِرَادَهْdesire
And I am smitten with one whose approval alone I desire,
In me is none but the desire for His approval,
and oh, how far what is desired lies from desire!
Oh the distance between the purpose and the desire!
سعدتI have been fortunate وليسand there is not ليfor me حزمٌprudence وغيْريwhile another
لهhe has حزمٌprudence وليسand there is not لهfor him سَعادَهْgood fortune
I have been fortunate, though I lack prudence, while another
I was happy while having no resolve, but another
has prudence, yet has no good fortune.
Has resolve while having no happiness.
