قدindeed هِمْتُI fell madly in love بالبدوَيِّwith the Bedouin فيin الحُللِthe fine robes
وكَلِفْتُand I became enamored بالحَضَرِيِّwith the city-dweller فيin الكِللthe canopies
I have fallen madly in love with the Bedouin in fine robes,
I was inclined towards nomadism in robes,
and become enamored of the city-dweller beneath the canopies.
And was burdened with urbanism in shackles.
فالقلبso the heart حُلَّةُa robe ذَاthis one وكِلَّةand a canopy ذاthat one
والجِسْمُand the body للشخصِينfor the two people كالطَّللlike a ruined dwelling
So my heart is this one's robe and that one's canopy,
The heart is the robe of one, and the shackle of another,
and my body, for them both, is like a ruined dwelling.
While the body is like a saddle for both.
هذاthis one يميلinclines إِلىtoward الجِيادِthe fine steeds وذَاand that one
أَبداًalways تراهyou see him يَحِنُّhe yearns للإِبِلfor camels
This one favors fine steeds, and that one—
One leans towards steeds,
you always see him yearning for camels.
While the other you’ll always see yearning for camels.
بَدْرَانِtwo full moons بلrather شمسانِtwo suns نُورُهُماtheir light
صَدَأُrust العُقُولِthe minds وصَيْقَلُand the burnisher المُقَلِthe eyes
Two full moons—rather, two suns—whose light
Two moons whose light:
is the rust of minds and the burnisher of eyes.
Rusts minds and polishes hearts.
قالsaid الفؤادُthe heart وقدand already عَشِقْتُهماI loved them both
مَالِيI have no بِمحْبُوبينwith two beloveds منany قِبَلcapacity to cope
My heart said, when I had fallen in love with them both:
Said the heart after falling for them both:
"I have no strength to cope with two beloveds."
Why would I love two before?
لوif كنتyou had been حاضرَناpresent with us وقدand already حضَراthey both arrived
متلثَّمينِboth veiled بوردتيْwith two roses خَجَلbashfulness
If only you had been there with us when they both arrived,
If only I was with them as they arrived
veiled in two roses of bashfulness!
Veiled in my roses, shy.
فلثمْتُthen I kissed منfrom فَرْعhair إِلىto قَدَمٍa foot
وضمَمْتُand I embraced منfrom صدْرٍa chest إِلىto كَفَلِbuttocks
Then I kissed them from their hair down to their feet,
I’d kiss from branch to foot,
and embraced them from chest to buttocks.
And embrace from chest to shoulder.
وعقدْتُand I tied شعْرةَa strand of hair ذاthis one بشَعْرةِto a strand of hair ذاthat one
وحَللْتُand I undid ذَاكَthat العقْدَthe knot بالقُبَلِwith kisses
And I tied a hair of this one to a hair of that one,
I’d tie the hair of one to the other’s,
and undid that knot with kisses.
And adorn that knot with kisses.
