    I gave though they withheld; I was faithful though they betrayed.

    My beloveds—but I do not treat them as they treated me.

    My joy becomes plain [when] they appear before my eyes,

    just as my heart has left me since they departed.

    Indeed, it is hard for me to live when they are far away,

    just as my own exaltation means little to me when they are abased.

    And indeed, they acted justly in killing my soul and did not transgress.

    And indeed, they were true in possessing my heart and did not betray.

    تَنَاسَوْا تَقاسَوْا كُلُّ هَذَا ولاَ كَانُوا

    Yes, they forsook me, turned away, accused me unjustly, avoided me;

    they feigned forgetfulness, acted hard-heartedly—all this; would that they had never been!

    And the deeds of named things are derived from their names:

    thus brothers betrayed; thus neighbors acted unjustly.

    تجمّع فيها الظبيُ والغصنُ والبَانُ

    And I am smitten with a woman sweet of eyes, saliva, and adornment;

    in her are united the gazelle, the bough, and the bān tree.

    She is beauty gathered in one; she is the full moon, complete.

    She is the drowsy gazelle; she is the luxuriant bough.
