أَموتI die بمنfor one who لوif مرَّpassed ذيلُthe hem قميصِهhis shirt
علىover ميِّتٍa dead man أَحياهُrevived him بعدafter مَمَاتِهِhis death
I die for one whose shirt's hem, were it to pass
I die for one whose robe trailing
over a dead man, would revive him after his death.
Would revive the dead if o'er them trailing.
وأَعشَقُand I adore منone who قدindeed شاعhas spread عنabout سُكْرِthe drunkenness قَدِّهhis figure
حديثٌa tale تَثَنَّىthe swaying عِطفُهhis flank منamong رُوَاتِهits narrators
And I adore one whose figure's drunkenness is widely recounted in
And I love him whose perfumed locks
a tale whose narrators include the swaying of his flank.
Are the theme of talk in all men's talks.
فمِنso from كلِّevery قلبٍheart حازhe acquired كلَّall صِفَاتِهِits qualities
وَذاكand that لأَنَّbecause الحسنbeauty بعضُsome of صِفَاتِهhis qualities
So from every heart he has gathered all its qualities,
He has every fair and lovely trait;
and that is because beauty is but one of his qualities.
Beauty's very self those traits create.
غلبتُI bested عليهfor him الخلقَall people وَحديby myself فلمso did not يَعُدْremain
لَهُمْfor them طَمَعٌhope فيof عَطْفِهhis affection والْتِفاتِهand his attention
I alone bested all others for him, so no longer
I have turned mankind away from him,
do they hope for his affection or his attention.
None may hope his smile to win.
وقبّلتُهand I kissed him فيon الخَدِّthe cheek عشرينtwenty قُبْلةًkisses
وَذاكَand that نصابٌalms-tax threshold لمnot أَقُمْI discharge بِزَكَاتِهِits alms-tax
And I kissed him on the cheek twenty times,
Twenty kisses on his cheek I printed,
and that is the taxable minimum, whose alms-tax I have not paid.
Though to pay his due I ne'er attempted.
تخوَّفَhe feared منof صَدِّيmy rejection فصدَّso he turned away تَجنُّباًto avoid it
وذلكand that ذنبٌa sin لمnot أَكُنْI was منamong جُنَاتِهits perpetrators
He feared my rejection, so he turned away to avoid it;
He feared my ardor and withdrew,
and that is a sin I had no part in committing.
A fault of his which ne'er I knew.
وأَعْرَضَand he turned away تِيهاًin conceit واستطالَand acted haughtily تَكَبُّراًin arrogance
فلوso if قلتُI said خُذْtake قَلْبيmy heart لماwould not قالhe say هاتهgive it here
And he turned away in conceit and acted haughtily in arrogance;
In pride he turned and went away,
so were I to say, "Take my heart," he would not say, "Give it here."
Had I said "My heart! Come, take it, pray!"
وحُوشِيتُand may I be spared أَنْthat أَعْتَاضَaccept compensation مِنْfrom بَعْدِafter حُبِّهlove for him
بِأَنْby means of أَتَسَلَّىdistracting myself عَنْهfrom him لاَno وَحَياتِهِand by his life
And far be it from me, after loving him, to accept compensation
He had not said me no. But I
in forgetting him—no, by his life!
Feared to solace me when he was by.
