كمhow many لناfor us منof خُلَسٍstolen moments فيin الغَلَسْthe predawn darkness
خُلَسٍstolen moments تمّتcame to pass برغْمِdespite الحَرَسْthe guards
How many stolen moments were ours in the predawn darkness,
How many stolen moments of joy we've had,
Stolen moments that came to pass despite the guards!
Moments that slipped by despite all safeguards,
ذقتُI tasted منهاfrom them عسلاًhoney منfrom لَعَسٍa dusky tint of the lips
آهah واشوقيoh, my longing! لذاكَfor that اللَّعَسْthe lips’ dusky tint
In them I tasted honey from dusky lips.
I've tasted in them honey from the bees,
Ah, my longing for that dusky hue!
Alas, my longing for that honeyed time!
كمhow often تنفستُI sighed فهلso is it...? عندكمknown to you
أَنَّthat نَفْسِيmy soul خرجَتْdeparted منfrom نَفَسْa breath
How often I sighed—do you know
How often I've breathed free - can you believe
that my soul departed with a breath?
My soul has left my body with each breath?
