إِنِّيindeed I ثَنَيْتُI turned عنaway from الحبيبِthe beloved عنانيmy reins
وأَطَعْتand I heeded فيهconcerning him دَوَاعِيَthe promptings of السُّلوانِforgetfulness
Indeed, I turned my reins away from the beloved,
And heeded the promptings to forget him.
وملأْتand I filled جَفْنيmy eyelid بَعدَafter بَيْنِparting from معذِّبيmy tormentor
وسَناًdrowsiness يَكادُalmost يَفِيضُoverflows منfrom أَجفانيmy eyelids
And filled my eyelid, after parting from my tormentor,
With drowsiness that almost overflows from my eyelids.
وأَرحْتُand I relieved أَلسِنَةthe tongues of الوَرَىpeople عنfrom قولهاtheir saying
هذاthis فلانٌso-and-so عاشقٌin love لفُلاَنِwith so-and-so
And gave people's tongues a rest from saying:
"This is so-and-so, in love with so-and-so."
