أَياO بَصَريmy sight لاdo not تنظرَنَّever look إِلىtoward بُصْرَىBusra
فإِنِّfor indeed I أَرَىsee الأَحْبَابَthe loved ones فيin بَلْدَةٍa town أُخْرَىanother
O my sight, never look toward Busra.
For I see my loved ones in another town.
وَمَاnor is بَلْدَةٌa town لمnot يَسْكُنُوهَاthey have inhabited it ببلدةٍa town at all
ولوeven if أَنهاit were بَيْنَbetween السِّماكَيْنِthe two Simak stars والشِّعْرَىand Sirius
No town they have not inhabited is a town,
Even were it between the two Simak stars and Sirius.
وماnor is القفْرُthe wilderness بالبيداءِin the desert قَفْراًa wasteland وإِنَّماbut rather
أَرَىI see كُلَّevery دَارٍdwelling لمnot يُكونواthey were بِهاin it قَفْراًa wasteland
Nor is the desert wilderness a wasteland; rather,
I see every dwelling without them as a wasteland.
تذكَّرْتُI remembered أَحْبَابيmy loved ones وإِنِّand indeed I لمُؤْمِنٌsurely a believer
ولكِنbut أَرَانيI find myself لَيْسَnot تَنْفَعُنيhelps me الذِّكْرَىremembrance
I remembered my loved ones, and I am indeed a believer,
Yet I find that remembrance does not help me.
وهَلْand is ...? مِحْنَتِيmy ordeal صُغْرىsmall لأَجلbecause of فِراقِهمparting from them
وقدwhen indeed أَبْصَرتهI have seen it يَبْطِشُstrikes fiercely البَطْشَةَthe blow الكُبْرَىthe greatest
And is my ordeal at parting from them a small one,
When I have seen it strike the mightiest blow?
لقدindeed أَضرنيhas harmed me البَيْنseparation المُشِتُّthat scatters وضرَّنيand hurt me
فَيَالَكَso, what a ... you are بَيْناًparting ماhow أَضرَّharmful وماand how أَضْرَىsavage
Separation, scattering us, has indeed harmed me and hurt me;
What a parting you are—how harmful, how savage!
أَأَهبِطُshall I descend? مِنْfrom مصرٍEgypt وقِدْماًand long ago قدindeed اشتهىdesired
عَلَىof اللهِGod أَقوامٌsome people فقالso He said اهْبِطُواgo down (all of you) مِصْرَاto Egypt
Shall I go down from Egypt, when long ago requests were made
Of God by some people, and He said, 'Go down to Egypt'?
فكمand how many ليI have بِهَاthere دِينَارa dinar وجْهٍof a face تركتهI left it
وَرَائيbehind me فَعَيْنيso my eye بَعْدَهafter it تشتكيcomplains of الفَقْرَاpoverty
How many a dinar of a face I have there, which I left
Behind me; without it, my eye complains of poverty.
فواللهso, by God ماnot أَشْرِيI buy الشآمthe Levant ومُلْكَهand its sovereignty
وغُوطَتَهand its Ghouta الخَضْرَاgreen بِشِبْرينِfor two handspans مِنْof شَبراShubra
By God, I would not buy the Levant and its sovereignty,
And its green Ghouta, for two handspans of Shubra.
فإِنso if عُدتُI return والأَيَّامand the days عُوجٌcrooked رَوَاجعٌturning back
لقدsurely أَنشأَتنيhas brought me forth قَبْلَهاbefore it النَّشْأَةَthe creation الأُخرىthe other
If I return—and the days bend and circle back—
The second creation will surely have brought me forth before then.
