    شيخةٌ في حَشا الزَمان جَنِينُ

    They turbaned her—[unclear word]—while Adam was clay.

    An ancient dame, while Time was still an embryo in the womb;

    ـفُّ عليها الأَوراقُ والزَّرجُون

    Before the vines were planted and there twined

    Around them leaves and vine shoots;

    رُ ولم يُعْرفَ الدُّجى والدُّجوُن

    Before darkness or light was created,

    And before deep darkness and gloom were known;

    And heaven's Pleiades were not yet

    A cluster, nor night's sign a date-palm stalk.

    An ancient dame, she never grayed through ages, until

    A people perished and generations passed away.

    She is a secret concealed in Time's mind,

    And knowledge hidden within his breast.

    She sees sorrow in the farthest reaches and banishes

    It—no wonder, for her bubbles are eyes.

    Every sorrow, when they unveil her before it—

    Though she is a virgin—is impotent.

    Indeed, whoever censures wine, however exalted,

    Is contemptible, and can scarcely speak clearly.

    She is nothing but life, spirit, and

    Repose, pleasure, youth, and wantonness.

    As for her, if we speak the truth, there are

    No impartial men, nor anyone to be trusted with her.

    And whoever censures her is either a miser,

    Monopolizing her, or a man of suspect motives.

    Whoever has seen her cup, she has surely bewitched

    Him—indeed, you are all bewitched by her.

    Al-Amin did not give up drinking her, though he was

    The imam of guidance; nor did al-Ma'mun.

    And with her he sought aid against

    Sorrows after his deposition—al-Musta'in.

    So rise, and set your course for Darin,

    All together, for her home is Darin.

    And buy her with whatever is costly or

    Cheap, for what is precious becomes cheap for her sake.

    واخْرجُوها إِنَّ الدِّنَان سُجُون

    And set her free: Time is a jailer;

    And bring her out: the wine jars are prisons.

    The jar is nothing but her prison; that is why

    She laughed when she saw it departing.

    Indeed, my poverty for wine's sake is wealth,

    Or my left hand, with the cup in it, is my right.

    She is an excellent helper if sorrow joins

    My heart—and sorrow is a wretched companion.

    And when my nights unsettle my affairs,

    A radiant dawn from it clears them.

    Through her I find respite from reason's ill fortune,

    For ill fortune comes from it.

    يقيناً ما الحظُّ إِلاَّ الجُنُونُ

    And leave reason aside: you will attain good fortune;

    Assuredly, good fortune is nothing but madness.

    Everyone your eyes have seen among humankind

    Living happily is surely mad.
