Why do I hold back my hopes of you

and turn away from you as though I loathed you?

And I see you turning away, exposing

my heart to the blows of my anguish's arrows.

And I see that, since you cut my hope short,

you have prolonged the allotted spans of my life.

It never entered my thoughts or my mind

that we would come to such a state.

O you who saw my fortunes with your own eyes—

when she departed, my prosperity's decline—

and saw my estrangement become unbroken

    since she tore my limbs apart through separation;

and saw my state unadorned—how often

it had been adorned by her overflowing grace!

O paradise that turned away, I have a hope

thirsting for her and scorched by her rejection.

    لكِنْ وفاتُكِ سُواءُ أَعمَالِي

    Your death is not as they claimed;

rather, your death is what my deeds deserved.

By God, if you were told my story,

you would know I am the next to follow you.

And I rejoiced at the nearness of reunion, even if

    reaching it meant facing terrors.

I go forth at dawn with a soul and a breath:

this one bowed down, that one rising high.

And I return at dusk with grief renewed

by a thought that carries it across my mind.

And the clouds have said to my eye:

“After you, I no longer pour in torrents.”

And though your image now fills it,

in truth it is as though empty.

And likewise my hearing, if you knew its state,

loathes listening to gossip and idle talk.

It hears no pleasant words; so can

the reproach of reproachers find favor with it?

How cheaply they offer me their reproach,

yet my acceptance of it comes dear.

And sorrow's riding camels have settled,

since it passed by the ruins of my body.

And the least of my grief is that I am a man

who has grown forgetful of consolation.

And I think that patience would be enticed,

should it come one day, by my excessive wailing.

And for your grave's sake, I have come, out of courtesy,

to accord the graves the greater part of my reverence.

And my migration now is toward them,

and to them are my halting and my journeying.

And my goal is your grave; indeed, seeing it

has become the foremost of my concerns.

I come to it in thirst for its dweller,

and leave it like one who sought water from a mirage.

It used to think, from my constant

devotion, that I was dead and moldering.

My sickness is life; so who will bring me glad tidings

of release from it and recovery?
