    O heart, alas for you! Your gazelle has appeared.

    Draw as far as you can from its pastures—draw away!

    I wished to tether it, but it fled my breast

    in rapture; I tried to hold it, but it flew away for joy.

    It came and lay felled by those dusky lips,

    thirsting, and returned slain by those charms.

    The gazelle inclined toward my ribs,

    and when it inclined, I became more inclined than it.

    Among the wonders is that, when he shot

    his arrows, he killed the heart without wounding it.

    And a lustrous duskiness upon a fawn's lips—

    if I wished to wipe it away with kisses, it would vanish.

    كالمسكِ إِلاَّ أَنَّه لمّا نَفَح

    Like night, except it has not yet grown dark;

    like musk, except it has not yet breathed fragrance.

    I kissed him and accepted my ardent love's command,

    and advised myself to break with those who advised me.

    I sipped his saliva in defiance of wine,

    from the cup of his lip, to the goblet's fury.

    And a woman slender at both flanks, each of which

    has girdled itself with sickness, not a sash.

    وبخدِّها الوردُ الجنيُّ قد انْفَتَح

    Before her glance, lawful magic itself blushed;

    upon her cheek the fresh rose opened.

    She bit her fingertips, coquetting with me,

    revealing a nursling of palm blossom beside a baby date.

    A mouth that shows you daisies beside it [unclear wording],

    at noon—or shows you yellowing beside it.

    I have a rosary of gems within her mouth,

    so I surpass all who glorify God with rosaries.

    Why will you not make peace with my kiss, O her cheek,

    when water within you has made peace with flame?

    فأَنا وهم مثلُ الأَصَمِّ مع الأَبَحْ

    How often they reproach me, yet I hear nothing from them;

    I and they are like a deaf man with a hoarse man.

    إِنَّ العذولُ عليكَ كلبٌ قد نَبَح

    The one who reproaches me for you is no babbling human;

    the one who reproaches me for you is a barking dog.

    I asked the heart, after patient endurance,

    to give it freely to me; it grudged and yielded not a drop.

    It did not catch its stinginess from her character,

    for often she gave freely while my heart would not.

    وذكَرْتُ عَوْد أَبي عَلِيٍّ فانْشَرح

    She grew distant from me, and my breast tightened after her;

    I recalled Abu Ali's return, and it opened wide.

    Life returned to creation along with rain,

    and tranquility to their hearts, along with joy.

    The One merciful to His servant showed mankind mercy,

    so he came as they had wished, and arrived as he had wished.

    He arrived to rebuild what had vanished, and set about awakening

    what had slept, and stayed to heal what had been wounded.

    Through him the days recovered from their sickness,

    even the breeze: had you asked, they would have said, 'It is well.'

    If the full moon were treated by nearness to his stirrups,

    it would be cured of disfiguring dark blotches and white patches.

    Spring came with winter, so do not ask

    about it, or how its life was put to shame.

    He kept putting it to shame: how often people said,

    'The clouds withheld,' and I replied, 'But the judge gave.'

    The vizierate grew splendid with his name and adorned itself

    in him, who wore the virtues as his robe and sash.

    وسعى سِواهُ لَها وَكان المُطَّرَح

    It came seeking his hand, and he was the chosen one;

    another pursued it and was cast aside.

    It threw itself at him in passion before he had glimpsed

    its face—what, then, do you imagine when he did glimpse it?

    The vizierate suited our most exalted lord,

    though in its own judgment he was fit for something loftier.

    His panegyrists were bewildered in describing him,

    so even his accomplished praiser seemed not to have praised him.

    And since they had sinned by falling short,

    whenever he accepted their praise, he was pardoning them.

    Pardon me: I too have fallen short; I am one of them.

    Who can match this bounty with these praises?

    ولِئن نطقْتُ فوجْهُ عُذرِيَ قد وضَح

    If I am silent, the grounds for my excuse are plain;

    and if I speak, the grounds for my excuse are clear.

    Your generosity made me speak—rather, struck me dumb.

    I see that my discourse has grown long and run unbridled.

    أَنت الَّذِي نَقص الأَنامُ وقد رَجَح

    You are the one who rose while mankind sank;

    you are the one who outweighed them while mankind fell short.

    You are the one whose generosity they could not impugn—

    how could they, when your hands' bounty kindled fire as it struck sparks?

    You have collared them, like doves, with favors,

    so in praising you they are like doves when they sing.

    Nothing but your praise is heard from them,

    and no bounty but yours is sought among them.

    وأَنا الَّذي اغْتَبق المكارِهَ واصْطَبح

    You are the one who possessed and encompassed noble virtues;

    I am the one who drank hardships at evening and at dawn.

    I lament obscurity, and give thanks for no gift

    except renown, the foremost of gifts.

    I show my enemy fortitude whenever there rises

    a base man, and smile at time though it scowls.

    I laugh with misfortune when it deals with me in earnest,

    as though it were my heart's beloved, jesting.

    When I laugh, if my inner self were revealed to you—

    may the Merciful protect you—you would see sorrow.

    How many a need my soul has aspired to,

    and how many a great aim my gaze has reached for!

    God has opened the way to my desire, for He

    has granted victory with your triumphant procession's arrival.

    I drew hopes close to my heart when he drew near,

    and likewise drained my tears when he went far away.

    Now that you have arrived, I shall forgive what

    my fate has done to me, and heal what it has wounded.

    فالعِزُّ يأْتِي في زَمَانِك والمُلَح

    So enjoy a fast after a feast that has now come;

    for glory and delights come in your time.

    I composed it while its meter was languid,

    yet it came as though its embers had scorched.

    فَلَو أنَّها انْفَسَحت كَجودِك لانْفَسح

    Its rhymes were cramped, and my breast is cramped;

    if they expanded like your generosity, it too would expand.

    إِنْ قَال عن محبوبِه فيها شَطَحْ

    Before me, it proved unruly even for Mihyar;

    if he spoke of his beloved in it, he strayed wildly.

    Its fatḥa vowels followed in succession, and it disdained

    Abd Allah's words, 'until we make peace.'
