    You have gone too far, O fever of his, in your fierce burning.

    For if his mouth so wished, it would quench you with coolness.

    فما الطبُّ إِلا دفعُكَ الضِدَّ بالضدِّ

    So press that kissable mouth against her for a while;

    For medicine is only your countering one opposite with another.

    إِلى أَنْ أَراها قبَّلَتْكَ على الخَدِّ

    Nor was kissing you on your dusky lips enough for her;

    She has gone on, I see, to kiss you on the cheek.

    Were anyone but her to share you with me,

    He would see what no one thought I had in me.

    And no wonder that your complexion has changed:

    Do you not see what heat does to roses?

    When will the blaze of sickness and its fire die out,

    So I may gather the fruits of union from the Garden of Eternity,

    With kisses that leave both lips without their dusky hue,

    And an embrace that leaves the chest without a swelling breast?
