قالواthey said بداappeared اليرقانُjaundice ملءَfilling جُفُونهhis eyelids
قالوا بدا اليرقانُ ملءَ جُفُونه
وَبَدُونِهِand for less than that يدْنُوdraws near سُلُوُّforgetting one’s beloved الأَنْفُسِthe souls
وَبَدُونِهِ يدْنُو سُلُوُّ الأَنْفُسِ
They said, “Jaundice has appeared, filling his eyelids;
and even less than that brings souls close to forgetting.”
فأَجبتهمso I answered them كيفَhow السُّلُوُّforgetting the beloved وإِنماwhen only
فأَجبتهم كيفَ السُّلُوُّ وإِنما
فيon اليومthis day قدindeed كَمُلَتْhave become complete صفاتُqualities النَّرْجِسthe narcissus
في اليوم قد كَمُلَتْ صفاتُ النَّرْجِس
So I answered them, “How could one forget, when only
today have the narcissus’s qualities become complete?”
