    His tears coursed down his smooth cheek,

    And he snared me with pearls from a kohl-dark eye.

    And when he sensed parting, he was gracious,

    Embracing his friend and kissing his beloved.

    And he had been like the sun at sunrise,

    But became like the sun at day's end.

    تقابِلُها جمرةٌ للغَلِيل

    So I stood upon a live coal of farewell;

    A live coal of burning longing faced it.

    I roam through the dwellings of the beloved,

    And stumble over a long train of tears.

    So the heart does not hope for solace,

    For that would be to hope to attain the impossible.

    فكيف ترانِي يَومَ الرَّحيل

    And I was anguished on the day of meeting;

    How, then, will you find me on the day of departure?

    May God guard a full moon among the departing,

    Through whom I strayed from the straight path.

    فيا رحْمتَا للعزيزِ الذَّلِيلْ

    Through him I inherited humiliation despite my dignity;

    Oh, pity the mighty brought low!

    For he is nothing but the torment of souls,

    And the capture of hearts and the snaring of minds.

    يتيهُ علينا بوجهٍ جميل

    Beauty gloried in him, or began

    To lord it over us with a lovely face;

    Then adorned his eyelids with languor

    And graced his lips with a languid droop.

    So that beauty leads me to him,

    And that coquetry is a guide to him.

    And I said, as his dream-vision brought me glad tidings:

    "When shall we meet?" He said, "In a little while."

    So welcome, welcome to the beloved's dream-vision,

    But no welcome to the reproacher's words.

    And may God bless the soil of a dwelling

    Where I trailed my robes in youthful dalliance.

    A breath of the north wind bent my frame,

    And there a breath of wine died away.
