    Parting decreed a union of sorrow and my heart,

    and estrangement undertook to reconcile my eye with my tears.

    And the one I love strove to sever our union—

    no wonder: even a star may perish through severance.

    And an abode of the woman with the beauty mark—yet often

    I was too absorbed in myself to question the abode.

    And wondrous is how separation's ambition soared,

    and reached so far that it parted the dwellers of Jamʿ.

    فما أَذِنَتْ في نَازِلِ الشَّوقِ بالرَّفْع

    And in the encampment is she whom I made my thoughts' focus;

    yet she would not permit longing's affliction to be lifted.

    One of the Yaʿrubite women, guarded by what

    the raiders' horses stirred up—dust.

    And one who regards boredom as a creed—

    and that, by God's life, springs from nature's greed.

    ولَمْ أَرَ أَصلاً قَطُّ يُعْزى إِلى فَرْع

    She glories in a tress from which my affliction takes root;

    and never have I seen a root traced to a branch.

    فكيف تَرى مِن بَعْده حالَةَ الطَّلْع

    And she smiles, revealing that beside which pearls are eclipsed;

    so how, after that, do you think palm blossoms fare?

    How many she has left dead in that encampment,

    and how much the ribs have borne from her, despite their lameness!

    And how often, between us, the embers of our embraces melted

    her necklaces, until the scorching drove us apart.

    May God water the days of union with my tears,

    shed over them, though they pour and well up beyond measure.

    A time when the hand of wishes led revelry,

    and mutual accord fractured estrangement's solidity.

    And no bounty of kindness turned aside, nor did love

    forsake union's reign among us by deposing it.

    Whenever I wished, a flirtatious gazelle sang to me,

    lively in his swaying, slow to break promises or refuse.

    He sings, and wine blushes crimson with shame,

    for falling short of such guileful theft of reason.

    So I turn my cup aside when its spirits dim,

    and drink his cup from him with the mouth of hearing.

    وسارَ فأَبقى كُلَّ قَلْبٍ عَلى فَجْع

    He grew distant, and sleeplessness over him drew near each eye;

    and he departed, leaving every heart stricken with loss.

    Whenever my eye looks at another, it veils itself

    for shame, in tears—the emblem of fidelity.

    And if my soul resolves to seek another,

    then in what armor could it face the arrows of restraint?

    فاعجب لضرٍّ جَاءَ مِنْ جِهَة النَّفْع

    His favors grieve people by calling him to mind;

    so marvel at harm that came from the quarter of benefit.

    How wondrous his letters! If the foes saw

    a request in them, they would not deny them payment.

    And if, after they wrench out a benefactor's heart, they are told,

    'You have overdone it,' they say, 'This is my brevity, and this my contentment [uncertain reading].'
