Why have I been forsaken without fault,

and taken captive by you without a war?

and persisted in loving me, contriving it

    against me without reason."

    earnestly, saying, "Who possesses me?"

Indeed, you fettered my mind in love—

alas for love!—and stole my reason.

    O raider, whose glance

is unsheathed while reason is plundered:

when you raided, you stripped me

    of everything except my love.

It is a signet in his mouth—oh,

what it holds of my Lord's handiwork!

be His majesty—and love is my own doing.

When shall I see the dinar of your cheek

    approved at the mint?

Who will ask the beloved what

causes his hostility toward the lover,

and tell me why I come

to him who sickens me, seeking my cure?

And say why it has dealt harshly with me—

my drought—and why I have not been favored with plenty?

his two palms sweat with ten rainclouds.

His bounty visits me only at intervals,

though my praise has never missed a turn.

    My days grew dark after

I made my meteors rise in his assembly.

I saw my share from him turn

aside, so I laid my side down.

my gatekeeper, so I tore away my veils.

falling short, so I prolonged my reproach.

unlike everyone else's, for no offense.

And the decrees are turned back—those

you signed to relieve my distress.

    The customary allowance is something

every noble man still deems a duty.

Are you not, O master of kings,

    obeyed in East and West?

God created, both non-Arab and Arab?

You are he whose two hands never turn

    from pouring and spilling forth.

They will not turn aside until

the raging winds turn from their course.

and it answers without a yawn.

what once was hard no longer hard.

and shattered every backbone within it.

and how many have you slain, with every victory!

one of my servants and companions.

have let Time blunt my edge.

held in my right hand, my keen-edged sword?

the ending of the steady flow of gifts.

verse, nor is poetry how I earn my bread.

    ـحَرُني فَيَسْبِني ويُصبي

    takes me captive, and makes me yearn;

and because from it comes a ceaseless

stirring of my wonder and my pride.

from your bounty—and how long my reproach has lasted!

though they have lodged it in a lizard's burrow.

Gray hair is salt; so make the compensation

    for salt something sweet.

And if I live on—and may you never grow distant—

then, after God, you are enough for me.
