ياO وَيْحَalas for منone who أُخرِجَwas expelled عنfrom ملكِهhis dominion
I parted from the one whose master I had been.
Alas for one expelled from his dominion!
نقلتI moved نفسيmyself جَاهِداًwith great effort بَعْدَهafter him
منfrom سعةٍease العيشِof life إِلىto ضنْكِهits hardship
After him, I moved myself with great effort
from life's ease into its hardship.
وخفتand I feared هَتْكَthe rending of السِّترthe veil فيهconcerning him فقدand indeed
وقَعْتI fell فِيمَاinto what خِفِتI feared منof هَتْكِهits rending
And I feared the veil over him would be torn; indeed,
I have suffered the very exposure I feared.

And I had a necklace of joy; now
I have scattered that necklace from its thread.

And many a friend of mine was in tears
when he saw the envier laughing.
فديتmay I be ransom for منthe one whom لمnot أَرI have seen ليfor me لائماًa reproacher
يَلومُنيhe blames me إِلاَّexcept علىfor تَركهleaving him
May I be ransom for him—I have seen no reproacher
blame me for anything but leaving him.
