    Grant me words with which I may praise you,

    Or restrain your hand from writing letters.

    I have drowned in them: you have composed for me not letters,

    As they seem to the eye, but clouds you have created for me.

    You sought through them to expose my inadequacy among humankind,

    And surely one such as you attains what he seeks.

    هيهاتَ أَدَّبْتَ من لا يُحسِن الأَدَبَا

    And perhaps you wished through them to school me in letters;

    Vain hope! You have schooled one unskilled in letters.

    Your radiant words—you have spent them extravagantly,

    And your excuse is that you saw them as gold.
