My eyelids betrayed me when they did not overflow with my blood,

but my body kept faith when it overflowed with sickness.

It was not my eye alone that wept in pain,

but my entire body wept for you in pain.

My sickness and your death—O two sorrows on one tether!

Rather say, if you wish: O two arrows at close range!

Your death's herald announced it in whispered hints,

yet he proclaimed my death openly to the nations.

I went out behind you, carried, just as they went out

with your pure body borne upon their heads.

Alas for me, when he saw me riding with them,

and I walked neither on my head nor on my feet!

I claimed grief for you as my inheritance; to it I was

more entitled and more deserving than all the children.

You left me to a misery I had never known,

while you enjoy the blessings of the garden of Firdaws.

    O dweller among gardens adorned

with light, I am in darkness from sorrow.

How often I said, 'Would that my people knew what

they know!' But may you never know what afflicts them.

In the garden of Firdaws you have not forgotten them,

and you have never ceased to remember your kin.

    حاشَا لِمِثْلكَ يَنْسَى عَادَة الكَرَمِ

    You have kept for them the treatment they were used to;

far be it from one like you to forget the habit of generosity.

You met your Lord, absorbed in beholding Him,

and turned toward neither houris nor servants.

For ninety-five years you strove in His worship,

never complaining of boredom or weariness in it.

Your back had bent, and its pillars had collapsed,

from bowing before Him, not from old age.

You kept vigil, upright before God, seeking His reward,

and whoever seeks the garden of Firdaws does not sleep.

High rose an aspiration that passed the night with its Creator,

and in worship the loftiness of aspirations was revealed.

Worship made eternal life yours; both it and what

you were granted of it are marked by greatness.

You enter the garden of eternity through deeds,

not by luck, as they said, nor by allotted shares.

Whomever God knows to have goodness within, He lets hear

glad tidings of bliss before creation, in eternity past.

And whoever has a clear eye within his heart sees

what God inscribed upon the Tablet with the Pen.

O departed one, whom fair remembrance follows,

your enduring memory is solace for your absence.

    أَوِ انهدَمْتَ فشكر غيرُ مُنْهَدم

    Though you are missed, your memory is not missing;

or though you have crumbled, gratitude remains intact.

You left behind a beautiful and pleasing tale,

and that is an inheritance, but not one to be divided.

Yes, all glory has indeed been bequeathed to us

by your benefactions among Arabs and non-Arabs.

And people praise the goodness you bestowed,

and people give thanks for the blessings you granted.

Your kindness among them always filled every hand,

so gratitude to you came to fill every mouth among them.

You hastened to them with kindness you kept concealed,

and how can fires upon a mountain be concealed?

Excellence after you is a company no longer united,

and kindness after you, a necklace no longer strung.

You never turned to the world to possess it,

but to win within it the spoils of generosity.

How often another rose for the world, while it sat back

from him; yet the world rose for you, and you did not rise,

out of renunciation, to which wisdom called you, testifying

that your nature was fashioned upon wise principles.

May divine approval and forgiveness water your dust,

when a downpour of steady rain waters the soil.

    ما كلُ من ماتَ معدوداً من الرِّمَمِ

    For in the grave you are alive, aware, and joyful;

not everyone who dies is counted among decayed remains.

You dispelled the darkness of the grave you inhabit,

and the full moon has always dispelled the darkness of night.

He answered my moan when I visited his grave,

as though through it I were entering a sanctuary.

Whoever has not sent deeds ahead as you have

will gnaw both his hands in regret.

And he will know, when death awakens him,

that in his worldly life he had been in a dream.

Do not suppose every dead person is like our departed one.

Far, far from it! The dead differ in worth.
