O king whose command is never met

With anything but heed and obedience.

ما أَطولَ الليلَ على عاشِقٍ

ما أَطولَ الليلَ على عاشِقٍ

مهجتهُ بالهجْر مرتاعه

مهجتهُ بالهجْر مرتاعه

How long the night is for a lover

Whose heart is terrified by separation!

يشكو من اللَّيلِ ومن طولهِ

يشكو من اللَّيلِ ومن طولهِ

هذا وما مرَّ سوَى سَاعَه

هذا وما مرَّ سوَى سَاعَه

He complains of the night and its length—

All this, though only an hour has passed!
