O you whose unjust accusations are crimes,

Your lovers would find life if they died.

They departed as they came, to no avail,

And in loving you, they met dawn as they had spent the night.

They have persisted in their ignorance concerning you,

As though you were al-ʿUzzā or al-Lāt.

They answered with moans when you forsook them,

As though your estrangement were a pilgrimage station.

What can the reproachers do with a company

Who have passed beyond reach? Lovers have their afflictions.

Who can stop the reproachers from going,

And stop the lovers from coming?

O you, love for whom is the goal of the wise,

Keen-witted man—and all things have their goals.

This world boasts over its sister because of you,

And the heavens envy the earth.

You settled in my poetry and have not moved

From it, nor have longings moved away from you.

My poetry is palaces; you are their houri, the

Human one—my poetry is not mere verses.

I have not forgotten when my cheek was against his cheek,

Then my tears came in waves.

He said, 'Keep tears away from a cheek

On which are verses of golden adornment.'

I said, 'And why, my slayer?' He said to me:

    'No talebearer enters Paradise.'
