وتنثُر لسحرَ بين الكُحل والكَحَل
She steps and sways amid jewelry and robes,
She walks between beauty and adornments
And scatters enchantment between kohl and her eyes’ natural darkness.
And sprinkles magic between kohl and dark eyes
كحلاءُnaturally dark-eyed ماnot اكتحلتْshe applied kohl بالمِيلwith the kohl wand عابثةًplayfully

إِلا لتُنْهض جَفْنيها من الكسل
Naturally dark-eyed, she never playfully applies kohl with its wand
A coquette who adorns herself carelessly with kohl
Except to rouse her eyelids from their languor.
Just to raise her sleepy eyelids from laziness

Her adornment comes from her own beauty, though she wears no jewels,
Her adornment comes from her finery though idle
And the finest jewelry is fashioned from being unadorned.
And the best adornment is one crafted from idleness

If she puts on jewels, their whispering upon her
And if she adorns herself, the concern for her jewelry
Is a quarrel between that waist and those hips.
Is an argument between that waist and ankles

Her saliva, that wine tasted like honey.

As though she were a gazelle in a trapper’s snares.

Often she unveiled two roses of audacity
For beauty’s deadly assault, not two roses of bashfulness.
