ولماand when أَنthat نزلتُI came to stay عَلَيْكَwith you ضيفاًas a guest
ولما أَن نزلتُ عَلَيْكَ ضيفاً
ولمand did not أَرَI see مِنْof قِرىًhospitality غيرَother than القِراعِcombat
ولم أَرَ مِنْ قِرىً غيرَ القِراعِ
And when I came to you as a guest,
When I came to you as a guest
And found no hospitality but combat,
And found no hospitality but hostility
كسرتَyou lowered (literally: broke) الجَفْنَthe eyelid (also: sword’s sheath) حينwhen أَرَدْتَyou intended قَتْليkilling me
كسرتَ الجَفْنَ حين أَرَدْتَ قَتْلي
وكسرُand breaking الجَفْنِthe sword’s sheath (also: eyelid) منof فِعْلِthe deed of الشُّجَاعَthe brave man
وكسرُ الجَفْنِ من فِعْلِ الشُّجَاعَ
You lowered your eyelid when you meant to kill me,
You broke resolve when you tried to kill me
And breaking the sword’s sheath is a brave man’s deed.
And breaking resolve is the act of the coward
