وقالُواand they said الهوىlove قِسْمانِtwo kinds فيin شِرْعَةِthe law of الهَوَىlove
لسُودِfor the black ones اللِّحىthe beards ناسٌsome people وناسُand some people إِلىtoward المُرْدِthe beardless youths
And they said: love is of two kinds under love’s law:
Some favor the black-bearded, and others the beardless.
أَلاtake heed إِنَّنيindeed I لوif كنتُI were أَصبُوto yearn لأَمْرَدٍfor a beardless youth
صبوتُI would yearn إِلىtoward هيفاءِa slender woman ميّاسَةِswaying القَدّthe figure
Indeed, if I were to yearn for a beardless youth,
I would yearn for a slender woman with a swaying figure.
فسودُfor the black ones اللِّحَىthe beards أَبصرتُI saw فيهمamong them مُشارِكاًa rival
فاخترتُso I chose أَنْto أَبْقَىremain بأَبْيضِهِمْwith their white-bearded one وَحْدِيby myself
For among the black-bearded I saw a rival,
So I chose to remain alone with their white-bearded one.
