وصغيرٍand one small القدّstature هِمْتُI fell in love بِهِwith him
وصغيرٍ القدّ هِمْتُ بِهِ
تَمّreached perfection فيهin him الحُسْنُbeauty فيin الصِّغرِyouth
تَمّ فيه الحُسْنُ في الصِّغرِ
And one small of stature—I fell in love with him.
Though short of stature, I cared for him,
Beauty reached perfection in him in youth.
In him perfection dwelt in a child.
قدindeed علاsurpassed بدرَthe full moon السماءِthe sky وإِنْand although
قد علا بدرَ السماءِ وإِنْ
كانَwas دَونَbelow البَدْرِthe full moon فيin العُمرُage
كانَ دَونَ البَدْرِ في العُمرُ
He surpassed the sky’s full moon, although
Though below the full moon in years,
he was younger than the full moon.
He rose to the zenith like the moon.
خضرةٌa greenish hue فيin لَونِهhis complexion ولَهُand he has
خضرةٌ في لَونِه ولَهُ
نفَسٌa breath يُعْزَىis attributed إِلىto الخَضِرِal-Khidr
نفَسٌ يُعْزَى إِلى الخَضِرِ
His complexion has a greenish hue, and he has
Greenish of hue, yet he has a soul
a breath attributed to al-Khidr.
That may be likened to verdure.
خدهُhis cheek معdespite ماءِwater روْنَقِهِits luster
خدهُ مع ماءِ روْنَقِهِ
مُجْدِبٌbarren منof خُضْرةِthe greenery الشَّعرِhair
مُجْدِبٌ من خُضْرةِ الشَّعرِ
His cheek, despite the water of its luster,
His cheek together with its sheen
is barren of the greenery of hair.
Is a hillock green with the hair's growth.
