بَدَاa new thought arose لهto him فيabout غداناour lunch
لأَنهbecause it مِنfrom غَدَاهُhis lunch
He had second thoughts about our lunch,
He saw it in our tomorrow
because it was part of his own lunch.
Because he was one of tomorrow's people
لوif لمhad not يَعِدْناhe promised us بِهِof it كاstart of 'would have been'
نend of 'would have been' شُغْلُناour occupation فيwith سِوَاهُsomething other than it
Had he not promised it to us,
If he hadn't promised it to us
we would have occupied ourselves with something else.
Our concern would have been for something else
وَلمand … not يَكُنhe was أَهْلworthy of هذاthis
لكنْbut رَحِمْناwe pitied بُكاهhis weeping
And he was not worthy of this,
And he wouldn't have been one of these people
but we pitied his weeping.
But we pitied his crying
وماand … not اتَّبعناwe followed هَوَاناour desire
بلrather اتَّبعناwe followed هَوَاهhis desire
And we did not follow our own desire,
And we didn't follow our passion
rather, we followed his desire.
Rather, we followed his passion
وماand … not أَردناwe sought رضاناour satisfaction
لكنbut أَردْناwe sought رَضَاهhis satisfaction
Nor did we seek our own satisfaction,
And we didn't want our consent
but we sought his satisfaction,
Rather, we wanted his consent
حتىuntil أَكلْناwe ate يَدَيْناour two hands
جوعاًfrom hunger فتبَّتْso may … perish يَداهhis two hands
until we ate our own hands
Until we ate our hands out of hunger
from hunger—so may his hands perish!
So his hands withered
أَيْنwhere المُقطَّعةthe short poem المسstart of 'the answered'
تجابُend of 'answered' فِيهاin it دُعاهhis prayer
Where is the short poem
Where is the answered, blessed one
in which his prayer is answered?
In which his prayers are answered
لأَنهbecause he شاءَwished مِنهاfrom it
تَقْطِيعَهhis tearing apart لحِشَاهof his entrails
For he wished through it
Because from it he willed
to tear his own entrails apart.
Its fragmentation for his arrows
فعادso he went back فِيهاon it وأَبْقَىand preserved
حَيَاتَهhis life لاmay … not حَيَاهkeep him alive
So he went back on it and preserved
So he returned in it and kept
his life—may God not keep him alive!
His life, no life
واللهُand God منْهاfrom it كفاناspared us
بِفَضْلِهِby His bounty وَكَفَاهand spared him
And God spared us from it
And God sufficed us from it
by His bounty, and spared him too.
With his grace and sufficed
وَهَانَand it was easy أَلاَّthat … not نَرَاهاwe see it
بكَونناby our being لاَnot نَرَاهwe see him
And not seeing it mattered little,
It was disgraceful that we don't see it
since we did not see him.
Since our being is not seeing him
