فلِبَاسيso my attire فيهin it غَرامٌpassion جَديدnew
A feast of love for the beloved has returned to me;
The season of love has returned in this feast,
so my attire for it is a new passion.
So my attire is imbued with new passion.
ونحرتُand I sacrificed الجفونَthe eyelids مِنfrom بَعدِafter أَنْthat أَشI informed (first part)

And I sacrificed my eyelids, after I had
I've sacrificed my eyelids after feeling
told my heart that my patience was far away.
My heart convinced my patience is far.

وكذاand likewise البدْرُthe full moon بَعْدafter شيبٍgray hair وَلِيدُa newborn
Passion has returned a newborn after growing gray,
Burden returned after white hair as a child,
and likewise the full moon is newborn after growing gray.
And so is the full moon after white hair.
فغرامِيso my passion بالبدرِfor the full moon كالبدرِlike the full moon لَكِنْbut

My passion for the full moon is like the moon, but
My passion for the full moon is like the full moon, but
the moon wanes, while passion grows.
The full moon wanes while passion grows.
لاdo not تُهوِّنbelittle مِنَof الغَرامِpassion شَديداُfierce

إِنَّindeed بأْسَthe force of الغَرَامِpassion بَأْسٌa force شَدِيدmighty
Do not make light of fierce passion;
Do not underestimate intense love,
indeed, passion's force is a mighty force.
For the might of passion is severe.

A heart's beating is sorrows hammering at my heart,
The throbbing of a heart, sorrows pounding a heart,
just as iron strikes iron.
Are like iron pounding iron.
طَالَhas lasted long قَتْلِيmy slaying بسيفِby the sword of لَحظٍa glance كَحيلٍkohl-dark

Long have I been slain by the sword of a kohl-dark glance;
The slaying of me by a deadly glance,
if only it were steel turned toward me!
I wish it were iron striking me.

I see only a glance whose two ends are
I see nothing but a glance, one side a tryst
an eye that promises and an eye that threatens.
And the other side a threat.

O you who broke resolve - unaware
that your own eyelids are the sheaths!
That eyelids thereby are broken!

In beauty you are the martyr's reward, so be
You are reward of a martyr in beauty,
my reward, for by your two eyes I am a martyr.
So be my reward for by your looks I'm martyred.

We have marveled, though your eyelid's bow is broken,
We were amazed though your eyelid's bow is bent,
when an unerring arrow comes from it.
Whenever an arrow came from it, straight and true.

May my father ransom the one who refuses my wish, like
By my father, who refused my desire,
Fate, which wills for me what I do not will.
To me is like time, wanting what I don't want.

He turned aside with his body and ensnared with his eye; always
It warded off kindness and blocked a glance,
this turns away, or that ensnares.
This one wards while the other lies in wait.

How am I condemned forever to the hell of this rejection,
How am I condemned to hell by such faith
when my sin in loving him is worship of him alone?
When my only sin is loving Him truly?

They tore me apart over him with blame and
They blamed and rebuked me about him,
rebuke, saying, 'Will you return?' I said, 'I will.'
And said, "Will you return?" I said "I shall return."

Let another long for Zurud; my longing is
One whose longing is diminished - while mine
for mail-rings in his cheek-down, not for Zurud.
For your rejection is lasting, not transitory.

The manuscript of beauty upon his cheeks is lovelier
The copy of beauty above his cheeks
to behold blackened than whitened.
Is lovelier than its darkening by kohl.

Among mankind there are many like him, yet
In the world many are like him, but
my infatuation is foolish and my love dull-witted.
My love is confused while their love is clear.

I have grazed on cheeks that were meadows,
I tended cheeks while they were gardens,
and seen meadows that were cheeks;
And saw gardens while they were cheeks.

I embraced cheeks while they were branches,
and bent branches that were slender forms.
And smelled branches while they were forearms.

And I have seen the heart delighted by what
I saw the heart flutter from what

Brings joy to union when separation weeps.

By my life, my life is like my two temple-locks:
By my life - and my life is like my love:
within it are white nights and black.
In it white nights and black nights.

So recalling my days with the beloved is a descent,
So remember the covenant of the beloved - decline,
and my praise of Abd al-Rahim is an ascent.
While my praise of the Merciful One - ascent.

From his two palms I have a garden of refuge,
From his rest I have a paradise for dwelling,
and through my praise he has immortality.
And for him my praise is eternity.

I am a servant, and my service is to praise a master
I'm a slave whose duty is praising the Master;
with whom petition and poem have both succeeded.
My purpose succeeded, and so the ode.

He is a judge—no, rather a prince, for
He's a judge, or rather prince, for through him
armies of lofty virtues have come to stand at his side.
Glories stand like soldiers before him.

And a jurist of bounty, he casts his gifts
The jurist of bounty grants gifts to mankind,
upon mankind, while the cloud repeats his lesson.
While the clouds repeat and repeat their rain.

How could they compare the bounty of his hands to the wind's
How they compared the softness of his hand to bitter wind -
swift course, when even winds fall still?
Though winds are still, and harsh to the touch!
أَوْor سَعواthey strove جُودَهhis generosity مَلاماًwith reproach

Or strive against his generosity with reproach
Or they thought his generosity fault and flaw,
and censure, only for reproach and censure to come to nothing?
So blame and flaw were lost.

They repeated their calls for his dismissal; he answered them:
They called for his removal - but everything
'Everything repeated is rejected.'
Called for, called and recalled, is returned.

Brothers who have never tasted separation:
Brothers whose thread was never severed -
he, valor, piety, and generosity.
He, might, piety and munificence.

When he prays, masters become slaves.

Fate is terrified of him, a trembling coward.
From him are frightened like rumbling thunder.

And a right hand: were Fate to riot drunkenly,
He could discipline time if it got drunk;
the prescribed penalties would be enforced upon it by that hand.
Limits would be placed upon it.

He sought glory, striving and keeping vigil for it,
He sought glory staying up late for it;
and journeyed by night while mankind slept, heedless of it.
While creation from it slumbered.

Even newborns almost testified to this!

The ascetic asks little from the ascetic.

I become, as is said, fortunate.
