رغبتI longed فيfor الجنَّةِParadise لماwhen بَدَاappeared
رغبت في الجنَّةِ لما بَدَا
أَنْموذَجُa likeness الجنَّةof Paradise فيin شَكْلِهِhis form
أَنْموذَجُ الجنَّة في شَكْلِهِ
I yearned for Paradise when there appeared
I longed for Paradise when there appeared
the model of Paradise in his form.
a likeness of Paradise in his form.
فصرْتُso I became منbecause of حِرْصِيmy eagerness علىfor شِبْهِهِone like him
فصرْتُ من حِرْصِي على شِبْهِهِ
فيat البَعْثِthe resurrection لاnot أَلْوِيI turn my attention علىto وَصْلِهunion with him
في البَعْثِ لا أَلْوِي على وَصْلِه
So, eager for his being mustered, I became
So, in my eagerness for one like him
at the Resurrection heedless of union with him.
at the resurrection, I ceased to care about union with him.
فانْظُرso look لماat what قدindeed جرّهhas brought it about حُسْنُهhis beauty
فانْظُر لما قد جرّه حُسْنُه
منin the form of تَوْبَةrepentance تَقْبُحُis unbecoming فيin the case of مِثْلهِone like him
من تَوْبَة تَقْبُحُ في مِثْلهِ
Behold what his beauty has brought about:
Look, then, at what his beauty has brought about:
repentance—unseemly where one like him is concerned.
repentance that ill befits one like him.
