بذلتُI gave وإِنeven though ضَنُّواthey withheld وَفَيْتI remained faithful وإِنْeven though خَانواthey betrayed
أَحبّايَmy beloveds لكِنْbut ماnot أَدينُI treat كماas دانواthey treated
I gave though they withheld; I was faithful though they betrayed.
I gave though they were stingy, and kept faith though they betrayed.
My beloveds—but I do not treat them as they treated me.
My loved ones - yet I'm not so indebted as they professed.
يبينbecomes apparent سروريmy joy ينunclear token; likely “when” بانُواthey appeared لناظريto my eyes
كماjust as أَنthat قَلْبيmy heart بانَdeparted عَنِّيfrom me مُذsince بانواthey departed
My joy becomes plain [when] they appear before my eyes,
My joy appears in my gaze when they show themselves to me,
just as my heart has left me since they departed.
Just as my heart revealed itself when first they came to light.
لقدindeed عزwas hard عِنْدِيfor me أَنto أَعيشَI live إِذاwhen نأََوْاthey went far away
كماjust as هانَmattered little عِنْديto me أَنَّthat أَعِزَّI be exalted إِذَاwhen هَانواthey were abased
Indeed, it is hard for me to live when they are far away,
Living seemed vile when they went away from me,
just as my own exaltation means little to me when they are abased.
Just as, when they were disgraced, the noblest became base in my eyes.
وقدand indeed عدلواthey acted justly فيin قَتْلِkilling نَفْسِيmy soul وماand did not اعتَدَوْاthey transgressed
وقدand indeed صَدقُواthey were true فيin مِلْكpossession of قَلْبيmy heart وماand did not خَانُواthey betrayed
And indeed, they acted justly in killing my soul and did not transgress.
They were equitable in killing my soul, and did not transgress,
And indeed, they were true in possessing my heart and did not betray.
They were true in possessing my heart, and did not betray.
نعمyes هَجَرُواthey forsook صدُّواthey turned away تَجنَّواthey accused unjustly تَجنَّبُواthey avoided
تَنَاسَوْاthey feigned forgetfulness تَقاسَوْاthey acted hard-heartedly كُلُّall هَذَاthis ولاَand may … not كَانُواthey have existed
Yes, they forsook me, turned away, accused me unjustly, avoided me;
Yes, they abandoned and opposed and held aloof and avoided me,
they feigned forgetfulness, acted hard-heartedly—all this; would that they had never been!
They forgot and were harsh - yet in all this they were not to blame.
ويُشْتَقand is derived فعلُthe action المسَمياتِof named things منfrom اسْمِهَاtheir name
لذاfor this reason خَانَbetrayed إِخوانٌbrothers لذاfor this reason جَارَacted unjustly جِيرانُneighbors
And the deeds of named things are derived from their names:
And the verb of appellations is derived from their noun:
thus brothers betrayed; thus neighbors acted unjustly.
So comrades betrayed, and neighbors deserted.
وبيand I am smitten with حُلْوَةُa sweet woman العينينِthe two eyes والريقِand the saliva والحليand the jewelry
تجمّعcame together فيهاin her الظبيُthe gazelle والغصنُand the bough والبَانُand the bān tree
And I am smitten with a woman sweet of eyes, saliva, and adornment;
In me is the sweetness of the eyes, the saliva, and the ornaments -
in her are united the gazelle, the bough, and the bān tree.
In me the gazelle, the branch, and the bright moon are gathered.
هيshe is الحسنُbeauty مَجْمُوعٌgathered together هِيَshe is البدرُthe full moon كَامِلٌcomplete
هيshe is الظَّبيُthe gazelle وسْنَانٌdrowsy هيshe is الغصُنthe bough فَيْنَانُlush and leafy
She is beauty gathered in one; she is the full moon, complete.
I am beauty embodied, the perfect full moon,
She is the drowsy gazelle; she is the luxuriant bough.
I am the gazelle, the tender branch, the sapling luxuriant.
