شَمْسٌ بغيرِ الليل لم تُحْجَبِ

وفي سِوَى العينين لم تُكْسَفِ
A sun never veiled by anything but night,
A sun unhidden by the night,
and eclipsed nowhere but in her two eyes.
undarkened in any eyes but mine,
مُغْمَدةُsheathed المُرْهَفِthe keen-edged blade لكنَّهاbut she

تقتل بالغِمْدِ بلا مُرْهَفِ
Her keen blade is sheathed, yet she
a naked blade, its sheath dispensed with,
kills with the sheath, without a blade.
killing unsheathed, by being sheathed,
رأَيتُI saw مِنْهاfrom her الخُلْدَthe mole فيin جُؤْذُرٍa wild-ox calf

وناظِرَيْ يعقوبَ في يُوسُف
In her I saw a mole within a wild-ox calf,
I saw eternity in her fair roots,
and Jacob’s two eyes in Joseph.
and Jacob's eyes in Joseph.
