لقدindeed شيبتْنيturned me gray فيin الزمانِtime خُطوبُهits calamities
لقد شيبتْني في الزمانِ خُطوبُه
ولاand no عجباًwonder أَنthat شابَturned gray مَنْone whom شانَهُmarred him الخَطْبُthe misfortune
ولا عجباً أَن شابَ مَنْ شانَهُ الخَطْبُ
The calamities of time have indeed turned my hair gray.
The cares of time have turned my hair gray
And no wonder that one marred by misfortune has turned gray.
No wonder worries made gray what they may
ونوَّرand blossomed شَيْبٌgray hair فيin عذارhair along the cheek معذِّبيmy tormentor
ونوَّر شَيْبٌ في عذار معذِّبي
ولاand no عجباًwonder أَنthat نوَّرblossomed الغُصُنُthe bough الرَّطْبُthe tender
ولا عجباً أَن نوَّر الغُصُنُ الرَّطْبُ
And gray hair has blossomed in my tormentor’s cheek-beard.
And grays illuminate my pained visage
And no wonder that the tender bough has blossomed.
No wonder damp boughs shine at this age
