أَذُمُّI condemn شَباباًyouth لمdid not أَذُقI taste فيهin it لَذَّةًa pleasure
أَذُمُّ شَباباً لم أَذُق فيه لَذَّةً
ولاnor نِلتُI gained مِنْهُfrom it لاneither حَراماًanything forbidden ولاnor حِلاَّanything lawful
ولا نِلتُ مِنْهُ لا حَراماً ولا حِلاَّ
I condemn a youth in which I tasted no pleasure,
I squander youth in which I find no pleasure,
Nor gained from it anything forbidden or lawful.
Earning from it neither the illicit nor the lawful.
وأَحْمَدُand I praise مِنْهof it أَنَّنيthat I لستُI am not بَاكِياًweeping
وأَحْمَدُ مِنْه أَنَّني لستُ بَاكِياً
عليهِover it كماas يبكيweeps سوايَsomeone other than me إِذاwhen وَلَّىit has passed
عليهِ كما يبكي سوايَ إِذا وَلَّى
And I praise it for this: I am not weeping
Yet I thank it since I am not weeping for it
Over it, as others weep when it is gone.
As others weep over their youth when it has passed.
