عوَّضنيcompensated me بَعْدهُafter him بِتأْرِيقِwith sleeplessness
دهرٌTime رمىstruck جَمْعَناour union بِتفْرِيقِwith separation
After his departure, I was compensated with sleeplessness
Time separated us after our union
by Time, which struck our union with separation.
Throwing our gathering into dispersion
ضحَّيتُI sacrificed بالعينِwith the eye يومthe day of فُرْقتِهِhis parting
كأَنَّهas though it كانwas يَوْمa day of تشْرِيقTashriq (the days after Eid al-Adha)
I sacrificed my eye on the day of his parting,
I sacrificed my eye the day we parted
as though it were a day of Tashriq.
As if it were a day of celebration
يحومُhovers لثْمِيmy kiss علىover مَرَاشِفِهِhis lips
ويشْتهِيand longs أَنto يَعُومswim فيin الرِّيقِthe saliva
My kiss hovers over his lips
His kiss lingers on my pillow
and longs to swim in his saliva.
Yearning to swim in saliva
وربَّand many a ليلٍnight جادَgenerously bestowed الزمانُTime بِهِit
عانَقْتُهُI embraced him فيهin it أَيَّwhat an تَعْنِيقِembrace
And many a night that Time generously bestowed,
Many nights gifted by time
I embraced him in it—what an embrace!
I embraced him intensely
وباتَand was throughout the night ذاكَthat الرُّضَابُthe saliva منfrom فَمِهِhis mouth
رَاحِيmy wine وذاكَand that اللسانُthe tongue إِبْرِيقيmy ewer
And all night, that saliva from his mouth
That soft mouth of his
was my wine, and that tongue my ewer.
My comfort, his tongue my cup
