عَتِبْناwe reproached علىagainst الأَيَّامِthe days قبلbefore ظُهورهhis appearance
فأَعْتَبَناso he appeased us حتىuntil اعْتَذَرْنَاwe apologized مِنfor الْعَتْبthe reproach
We reproached the days before he appeared;
We blamed the days before his appearance,
Then he appeased us until we apologized for our reproach.
So he blamed us until we apologized for blaming.
يُخافُhe is feared ويُرجىand is looked to with hope صَوْلةًonslaught وسماحَةًand generosity
إِذاwhen جَادَhe gives generously فيin سَلْمٍpeace وإِنْand if صالhe attacks فيin حَرْبwar
He is feared for his onslaught and looked to for his generosity,
He is feared and hoped for, whether in peace or war,
When he gives in peace, and when he attacks in war.
Generous when peaceful, and fierce when in combat.
فقيلso it was said لهto him فيin الحرْبِwar ياO مُهلكَdestroyer العِداthe enemies
وقِيلand it was said لهto him فيin السِّلْمpeace ياO فاضِحَone who puts to shame السُّحْبِthe clouds
So in war he was hailed: “O destroyer of foes!”
In war they told him, "O destroyer of enemies!"
And in peace he was hailed: “O you who put the clouds to shame!”
In peace they told him, "O uncovered of clouds!"
تُخافُare feared عواديonslaughts بأْسِهhis might وهْوwhile he ضَاحِكٌis laughing
ويُرهَبُand dread is felt منof أَسيافِهhis swords وَهْيwhile they فيin القُرْبthe sheaths
The onslaughts of his might are feared even as he laughs,
The blows of his might are feared though he smiles,
And his swords are dreaded even while in their sheaths.
And his swords are dreaded though close at hand.
ويَستعبِدُand he enslaves الأَحرارَfree men بالبَذْلthrough largesse واللَّهىَand gifts
ويُنصرand he is granted victory منfrom قَبْلِbefore العَساكِرthe armies بالرُّغْبthrough desire
And he enslaves free men through largesse and gifts,
He enslaves the free with generosity and joy,
And desire brings him victory before armies do.
And aids those with desire before armies.
تودُّwish عِداهhis enemies أَنto تكونَbecome رعِيَّةًsubjects
لِتعدُوso they may roam لديهin his presence وهْيwhile they آمنةُsafe السِّرْبone’s person
His enemies wish to become his subjects,
His enemies wish to become his subjects,
So they may roam in his presence, their lives secure.
To be close to him, safe from harm.

The sun is seen, out of reverence for his station,
The sun in awe of his station,
Whenever it nears the west, prostrating before the sword’s edge.
When setting to the west, bows to the west.
