يَقولونَthey say لَوif قَبَّلتَهُyou kissed him لَاِشتَفىwould be healed الجَوىlove’s anguish
أَيَطمَعُdoes he hope فيfor التَقبيلِkissing مَنone who يَعشَقُloves passionately البَدراthe full moon
They say, “If you kissed him, love’s anguish would be healed.”
They say, if you had kissed him, the thirst would have been quenched
Can one who loves the full moon hope for a kiss?
Does one who loves the full moon yearn for a kiss?
وَلَوand if غَفَلَwas heedless الواشيthe talebearer لَقَبَّلتُI would kiss نَعلَهُhis sandal
أُنَزِّهُهُI hold him exalted أَنto أَذكُرَI mention الجيدَthe neck وَالثَغراand the mouth
And were the talebearer heedless, I would kiss his sandal;
Had the guardsman been absent, I would have kissed his sandal
I hold him too exalted even to mention his neck and mouth.
I spare him, lest I mention the cheek and lips
وَمَنand who ليfor me بِوَعدٍwith a promise مِنهُfrom him أَشكوI complain بِخُلفِهِof its breaking
وَمَنand who ليfor me بِعَهدٍwith a pledge مِنهُfrom him أَشكوI complain بِهِover it الغَدراbetrayal
And who can secure me a promise from him, so I might complain of its breaking?
Who do I have with a promise from him that I complain of its violation?
And who can secure me a pledge from him, over which I might complain of betrayal?
Who do I have with a covenant from him that I complain of betrayal?
وَماand not أَناI مَنone who يَستَحمِلُmakes carry الريحَthe wind سِرَّهُhis secret
أَغارُI am jealous حِفاظاًout of protectiveness أَنto أُبيحَI divulge لَهُto it السِرّاthe secret
And I am not one to make the wind carry my secret;
I am not one who can withstand the winds knowing my secret
I guard it jealously, lest I divulge the secret to it.
I am jealous to keep it private lest it be exposed
يَقولُhe says لِيَto me اللاحيthe reproacher وَقَدand already جَدَّhas grown fierce بيin me الهَوىpassion

The reproacher says to me, when passion has grown fierce within me,
The censurer says to me, as passion has firmly gripped me
to inspire patience in me, in his misguided imagining:
To inspire me negatively in his wicked imagination to have patience
أَلَمhave you not تَروِrecited قَطُّever اِصِبرbe patient لِكُلِّthrough every مُلِمَّةٍaffliction
فَقُلتُso I said أَماdo you not تَرويrecite لَعَلَّperhaps لَهُhe has عُذراan excuse
“Have you never recited, ‘Be patient through every affliction’?”
Have you not seen, be patient with every calamity
So I said, “Do you not recite, ‘Perhaps he has an excuse’?”
So I said, do you not see, perhaps he has an excuse?

When the band of reproachers comes with its sorcery,
When the group of enchanters come with their sorcery
then in Musa’s glance is a sign that undoes the sorcery.
In Moses' glance, there is a sign that nullifies sorcery
