The bird of my heart flew from my nest,

from the folds of the ribs.

And it was content with separation, and I did not know

    whether it would ever return.

Ah, the anguish that wore away my liver,

on the day they urged the camels onward,

when I sold reason, hand to hand,

    and bought torment.

And my heart's blood was lost without requital

    among those domed tents.

They left me bound to thought,

    standing at the encampments.

I ask the night about the dawn's light:

    will it ever rise?

No, by the spell of eyelids, I have not forgotten

    our days in the sanctuary,

when we sipped at dusky lips

and pressed out their dusky hue,

and drank a sun from its cup,

    crowned with stars,

nor my loss of self at Munyat al-Sadr,

    with a startled gazelle,

swaying in stature, slender of waist,

    stealing every heart.

Yes, separation's hand made my body

    a pasture for sickness.

Through it, my strength of will made me

    a jailer of passion.

I have cried out since love wasted my form,

    hoping for peace:

Longing has worn me thin, so accept my excuse

and do me justice by returning.

And from longing I wandered, knowing no

    pleasure in sleep.

No, by love's sacred claim, I shall not forget

    the beauty of those nights,

    لَم يَرُعنَا الزّوال

    when we dwelt amid their cooing, alone together;

their passing did not frighten us.

And we sipped at lips that tasted sweet,

which did not keep us waiting.

And we passed round cups of wine

    that stirs ardent longing.

And, while Time was heedless, we fulfilled

    a desire at the encampments.
