or a wine jar's daughter shining?

grown gray, yet never forgetting modesty!

Hers is the radiance of the stars,

and the sweetness of flowers' breath.

She is as delicate as thought,

yet she makes one forget one's thoughts.

    So drink; let the reproachers

choke on what we have drunk.

And be open about it: if they suspect

us of debauchery, they are right.

    How delightful a drink!

Sweet in his cruelty and his fruit,

    a tormentor, yet sweet—

how lovely he is, if only he were kind!

    وَالوُرقَ سَجعاً وَاِنثِنا

    وَسِحرُ مَن يَستَنطِقُ

    Life to whoever kisses him,

    and magic to whoever draws him into speech;

and a sun to whoever gazes,

and musk to whoever breathes him in.

    أَهدَت إِلى عَيني السَهَر

    The drowsiness of his eyes

    has gifted my eyes with sleeplessness;

    أَبدَعَ في حُسنِ الثَمَر

and the bough of his body

has wrought wonders in its fruit's beauty.

    So pluck his cheeks,

if you can pluck the moon.

But the full moon is not given

except to an eye that gazes.

    Its radiance draws near,

yet its form cannot be reached.

and every west is an east.

    She delighted Abu Yahya,

so praise of him is like love poetry.

The world is in love with him,

and his forbearance is like a watchman.

She sang, for he had failed

to answer when she called on him:

    “Let the watchman do

as he pleases, and let me love.

If he keeps me from him,

can he also keep me from longing?”
