وموضِعُand the place شكوايَmy complaint فماthen what أناI صَانِعُto do
If you shun me, though you are my treasure,
If you spurn me, and you are my provision,
And the one to whom I bring my complaints—what am I to do?
And the place I pour out my complaints, what can I do?
أقضّيI spend نهارِيmy day بالحديثِin conversation وَبِالمُنَىand in hopes
وَيجمَعُنيand brings me together وَاللَّيلَwith the night للهَمّfor sorrow جَامِعُa uniting bond
I spend my day in conversation and in hopes,
I spend my days conversing and with wishes,
And a bond of sorrow brings the night and me together.
And the night gathers me for anxious thought.
نهارِيmy day نهارُthe day النَّاسِthe people حتَّىuntil إذاwhen بَدَاappeared
لِيَto me اللَّيلُthe night هَزَّتنيstirred me إليكtoward you المضَاجِعُthe beds
My day is like everyone else's, until there appears
My days are the days of people until, when
Before me the night, and the beds stir me toward you.
Night appears to me, the beds shake me to you.
حرامٌforbidden علىto عينيmy eye يَلذُّgives pleasure لهاto it الكَرَىslumber
كماjust as حُرّمتwere forbidden يوماonce لموسىto Moses المَرَاضِعُthe wet nurses
Forbidden to my eye is the pleasure of slumber,
It is forbidden for my eyes to find rest
Just as wet nurses were once forbidden to Moses.
As nursing mothers were once forbidden to Moses.
