ما لي على السُّلْوانِ عَنْك مُعَوَّلُ

ما لي على السُّلْوانِ عَنْك مُعَوَّلُ

فإِلامَ يَتْعَبُ في هواك العُذَّلُ

فإِلامَ يَتْعَبُ في هواك العُذَّلُ

I have no hope of solace through forgetting you;

So how long will the reproachers weary themselves over my love for you?

يزدادُ حُبُّكَ كلَّ يَوْمٍ جِدَّةً

يزدادُ حُبُّكَ كلَّ يَوْمٍ جِدَّةً

وكأَنّ آخِرَه بقلبي أَوَّل

وكأَنّ آخِرَه بقلبي أَوَّل

My love for you grows fresher every day,

And in my heart, its latest moment seems like its first.

أَصبحتَ ناراً للمُحِبِّ وَجَنَّةً

أَصبحتَ ناراً للمُحِبِّ وَجَنَّةً

خَدَّاك جَمْرُ غَضاً وريقُك سَلْسَل

خَدَّاك جَمْرُ غَضاً وريقُك سَلْسَل

You have become both fire and paradise for the lover:

Your cheeks are embers of ghada wood, and your saliva is sweet, clear water.

لك لِينُ أَغصان النَّقا لو لِنْتَ لي

لك لِينُ أَغصان النَّقا لو لِنْتَ لي

ولك اعتدالُ قَوامِها لو تَعْدِل

ولك اعتدالُ قَوامِها لو تَعْدِل

Yours is the suppleness of branches on the dune—if only you were gentle with me;

And yours is their upright stature—if only you would be just.

يا راشقاً هَدَفَ القلوبِ بأَسهمٍ

يا راشقاً هَدَفَ القلوبِ بأَسهمٍ

خَلِّ السِّهامَ فِسْحُر طَرْفِك أَقْتَلُ

خَلِّ السِّهامَ فِسْحُر طَرْفِك أَقْتَلُ

O you who shoot arrows at hearts as targets,

Lay aside the arrows, for the magic of your gaze is deadlier.

ما لِلْوُشاةِ سَعَوا بنا يا لَيْتَهْم

ما لِلْوُشاةِ سَعَوا بنا يا لَيْتَهْم

ثَكِلوا أَحِبَّتَهم كما قد أَثْكَلوا

ثَكِلوا أَحِبَّتَهم كما قد أَثْكَلوا

Why have the slanderers schemed against us? Oh, if only they

Were bereaved of their loved ones, as they have bereaved others.

جَحَدوا الذي سمعوا وقالوا غيرَه

جَحَدوا الذي سمعوا وقالوا غيرَه

ولو انَّهمْ لا يسمعون تَقَوَّلُوا

ولو انَّهمْ لا يسمعون تَقَوَّلُوا

They denied what they heard and said something else;

And even if they heard nothing, they would invent lies.

هَبْ أَنَّ أَهلك أَوْعدو وتهدَّدوا

هَبْ أَنَّ أَهلك أَوْعدو وتهدَّدوا

مَنْ يَرْعَوي مِنْ ذاك أَوْ مَنْ يَقْبَل

مَنْ يَرْعَوي مِنْ ذاك أَوْ مَنْ يَقْبَل

Suppose your family have issued threats and menaces:

Who would desist because of that, or who would comply?

وَيْلاهُ منهم يُشْفِقون عليك مِنْ

وَيْلاهُ منهم يُشْفِقون عليك مِنْ

أَجْلي وإِشفاقي أَشَدُّ وأَكمل

أَجْلي وإِشفاقي أَشَدُّ وأَكمل

Alas for me because of them! They fear for you on

My account, yet my concern is stronger and more complete.

ما لي أُعاينُ وجهَ ودِّكَ مُعْرِضاً

ما لي أُعاينُ وجهَ ودِّكَ مُعْرِضاً

حَذَرَ الرَّقيب وَوَجْهُ ودّي مُقْبِل

حَذَرَ الرَّقيب وَوَجْهُ ودّي مُقْبِل

Why do I see the face of your affection turned away,

For fear of the watcher, while the face of my affection turns toward you?
