تلاhe recited فدعاand so he called قلبيmy heart إلىto حُبِّlove of وَصْلِهunion with him
تلا فدعا قلبي إلى حُبِّ وَصْلِه
وعهديand my knowledge بماof what يتلوهhe recites it يَنْهىforbids عنagainst الحبِّlove
وعهدي بما يتلوه يَنْهى عن الحبِّ
He recited, calling my heart to yearn for union with him;
Yet I know that what he recites forbids love.
فكيفhow then اصطباريmy patient endurance عنهaway from him لوif كانhe were مُسْمِعيmaking me hear
فكيف اصطباري عنه لو كان مُسْمِعي
غِناءُsinging الغوانيthe beautiful women منfrom مُقَبَّلِهhis lips العَذْبِsweet
غِناءُ الغواني من مُقَبَّلِه العَذْبِ
How then could I endure being apart from him, were he to let me hear
The singing of fair women from his sweet lips?
