لاdo not تلومواblame عليهon his account قلبَa heart مُحِبٍّof a lover
فجميعfor all القلوبِhearts طَوْعُobedient to يَدَيْهِhis two hands
Do not blame a lover's heart for loving him,
for all hearts are at his hands' command.
لاdo not تظنّواthink عِذارهhis cheek-down طرّزembroidered الخدّthe cheek
فماfor ... not كانwas ذاthat افتقاراًneed إليهfor it
Do not think his cheek-down embroidered his cheek,
for that was not out of any need for it.
إنماit was only that لحظُهhis glance أَراقspilled دماءًblood
وبداand appeared أُثْرهاits trace علىupon وَجْنَتَيْهhis two cheeks
It was only that his glance had spilled blood,
and its trace appeared upon his cheeks.
فرأىso he saw وَردَهاits roses بقتليَof my murder نمّاtell- (first part of 'telltale')
ماً-tale (completes 'telltale') فأَوْلىso he bestowed بنفسَجاًviolets عارِضَيْهboth sides of his face
Then he saw its roses betraying my murder,
so he bestowed violets upon both sides of his face.
فتيقنتُso I became certain أننيthat I ضاعwas lost ثأْريmy vengeance
حينwhen لمdid not يبقremain شاهدٌa witness ليfor me عليهagainst him
So I knew for certain that my vengeance was lost,
when no witness against him remained for me.
تودُّونyou wish (plural) عَوْديmy return لوif only قَدَرِتْI could إِليكمto you (plural)
وقدand indeed أَبْعَدmade distant المِقْدارfate فيin الَبْينseparation شُقِتّيmy journey
You long for my return to you—if only I could,
yet fate has lengthened my journey in separation.
كأَنّيَas though I were سَهْمٌan arrow كلّماwhenever جرّنيdrew me الهوىlove
إِليكمtoward you (plural) رمتْنيshot me الحادثاتcalamities فأَقصتِand so drove me far away
I am like an arrow: whenever love draws me
toward you, calamities shoot me away and drive me far.
كأَنيas though I سأَلتُI asked الرّيحthe wind عنabout لينsuppleness قَدِّهاher figure
فهزّتso it swayed قضيبَa bough البانthe bān tree ليfor me حينwhen هَبَّتِit blew
It is as though I asked the wind about her figure's suppleness,
so it swayed a bān-tree bough for me when it blew.

He has two petitioners, for knowledge and bounty; he answers one
with haste, and the other with careful consideration:
