تلاhe recited فدعاand so he called قلبيmy heart إلىto حُبِّlove of وَصْلِهunion with him
تلا فدعا قلبي إلى حُبِّ وَصْلِه
وعهديand my knowledge بماof what يتلوهhe recites it يَنْهىforbids عنfrom الحبِّlove
وعهدي بما يتلوه يَنْهى عن الحبِّ
He recited, stirring in my heart a love of union with him,
Though I know that what he recites forbids love.
فكيفhow, then اصطباريmy patient endurance عنهapart from him لوif كانhe were مُسْمِعيletting me hear
فكيف اصطباري عنه لو كان مُسْمِعي
غِناءُsinging of الغوانيthe fair women منfrom مُقَبَّلِهhis lips العَذْبِsweet
غِناءُ الغواني من مُقَبَّلِه العَذْبِ
How, then, could I bear being apart from him if he let me hear
The singing of fair women from his sweet lips?
