فارَقْتُI parted from بالْكَرْهِunwillingly مَنْthe one whom أَهْوىI love وَفارَقنيand he parted from me
فارَقْتُ بالْكَرْهِ مَنْ أَهْوى وَفارَقني
شَتَّانَfar apart لَكِنناbut we فيin الْوُدِّlove سِيَّانِare equal
شَتَّانَ لَكِننا في الْوُدِّ سِيَّانِ
I unwillingly parted from the one I love, and he parted from me.
I parted from the one I loved though she left me too,
Far apart are we, yet equal in love.
Yet far different we are regarding fond affection.
كأَنَّماas though قُدَّwas split طُولاًlengthwise يَوْمَthe day فُرْقَتِناof our parting
كأَنَّما قُدَّ طُولاً يَوْمَ فُرْقَتِنا
شَرْقاًeastward وَغَرْباًand westward فأَمْسىso by evening it became وَهْوَwhile it was يَوْمانtwo days
شَرْقاً وَغَرْباً فأَمْسى وَهْوَ يَوْمان
As though the day of our parting had been split lengthwise,
As though, since we parted, East and West elongated,
Eastward and westward, so that by evening it was two days.
Making the day we separated into two days.
