إن قَصَّرَت عَن غَرَضٍ رَميَةٌ

إن قَصَّرَت عَن غَرَضٍ رَميَةٌ

أو زَلَّ فِكرٌ أونَبَا خَاطِرُ

أو زَلَّ فِكرٌ أونَبَا خَاطِرُ

If a shot falls short of its mark,

If a shot falls short of a target,

or a thought slips, or inspiration fails,

or a thought errs, or a notion falters,

لانَّنِي فِيهِ عَلَى نِيَّةٍ

لانَّنِي فِيهِ عَلَى نِيَّةٍ

يُخبِرُ عَن بَاطِنِهَأ الظَّاهِرُ

يُخبِرُ عَن بَاطِنِهَأ الظَّاهِرُ

he blamed me for it, on account of my intention—

for in it I act with an intention

its outward face tells what lies within.

whose inner nature the outward appearance reveals.
