يا ربَّ ليلٍ بته
مثلlike مبيتِnight spent النابغهْal-Nabigha
مثل مبيتِ النابغهْ
Ah, many a night I spent
O Lord of a night that passed
Like the night al-Nabigha spent,
Like the night that befell Al-Nabigha
ولمand did not يساورنيassail me سوىexcept
ولم يساورني سوى
عقربِscorpion صدغtemple-lock لادغهْstinging
عقربِ صدغ لادغهْ
And nothing assailed me but
With nothing to keep me company
The stinging scorpion of a temple-lock.
Except a scorpion's sting in my temple
وقدand already بداappeared البدرُthe full moon المنيthe radiant (continued next line)
وقد بدا البدرُ المني
رُcompletion of 'the radiant' والثرياand the Pleiades بازغهْrising
رُ والثريا بازغهْ
And the full moon had appeared,
The radiant moon appeared
Radiant, with the Pleiades rising,
And the Pleiades rising
كأنهُas though it were ترسُshield لجينٍsilver
كأنهُ ترسُ لجينٍ
حولَaround درعٍcoat of mail سابغهْfull-length
حولَ درعٍ سابغهْ
As though it were a shield of silver
As if it were an armor's shield
Around a full-length coat of mail.
