The phantom of the loved ones came by night from afar,

so it gave us sleeplessness in place of slumber.

It came, freely descending through every valley,

to me, as freely as it turned back uphill.

And sighs of longing had toyed with it,

emboldening it to face grave danger.

O dweller among the arak trees, I see you

casting your gaze into the passes of every desert.

    You left al-Sham with us,

so watch the lightning's flash from Zarud's two sand-ridges.

I love you in separation and in nearness,

and remind you of the pledges of old.

And I envy my own eyes for beholding your phantom,

so mine is the anguish of the love-stricken and the envious.

And how can bright swords compare with fair women's glances,

with which I passed nights that were not dark?

And never, without the radiance of a brow,

did we travel to the lowlands and the highlands.

And in the well-defended camp of Uqayl

are noble women, like keen swords in their sheaths.

Delicate as the days of nearness,

paired with the likes of days of rejection.

They guard their glances with every keen blade,

and offer every neck to necklaces.

So they cleared the paths with keen swords,

and kissed smiling mouths with their cheeks.

And were it not for their familiarity with tall lances,

they would have veiled the slender spears with their figures.

They turned aside from the road on every sturdy steed,

lean-bellied, and every headstrong, swift-running mare.

And before the oryxes of the curtained chambers stand lions of war,

    steadfast in battle, like lions.

Horsemen who gather the fruits of high honor

with victory's hands from the leaves of iron.

And no valley—as though the hand of morning showers

had clothed it in necklaces of strung pearls—

where they alighted, yet unstrung no necklace,

and which they left with fragrant soil,

which fashions its dust into musk whenever

they trailed across it the hems of their striped cloaks,

where they then spent the night without laying aside a veil,

thinking its pebbles pearls from necklaces,

is lovelier than your descriptions in a book,

or more precious than your words in a poem.
